Derelict Vehicles To Be Removed From Nevis

Charlestown, Nevis
October 14, 2008

A number of persons on Nevis have taken advantage of the one month amnesty period for the disposal of derelict and abandoned vehicles but Manager of the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority Ms. Carlyn Lawrence said the response has been less than satisfactory from garages and auto repair shop owners on the island.

Ms. Lawrence told the Department of Information on October 13, that the Authority had embarked on the campaign for the month of October, in an effort to recycle and export an estimated 1000 abandoned vehicles, in its attempt to keep the island clean and healthy.

“We want people to take advantage of the amnesty period since we relaxed all fees associated with this. We have even relaxed our regulations because normally in order for us to take an abandoned vehicle, we would require the owners to de pollute the vehicle by removing all the fluids and the tires etcetera but we will take the vehicles as is,” she said.

The abandoned vehicles Ms. Lawrence noted had become havens for rodents and mosquitoes and a health hazard.

Charlestown, Nevis

Minister with responsibility for Co-operatives on Nevis Hon. Robelto Hector, said the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union (NCCU) embodied the theme of International Credit Union Week 2008 – “My Credit Union: It belongs to Me”.

In an address to launch a celebratory week of activities on NTV Channel 8 on October 12, Mr. Hector contended that for over 30 years due to the pioneering work of some Nevisians, thousands of ordinary citizens now had an ownership stake in a thriving financial co-operative business that they could call their own ““ the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union.

The Co-operatives Minister said the local Credit Union movement would this year celebrate International Credit Union Week with a special sense of achievement, mindful that the three credit unions in the Federation, with a support base of 12, 300 members, had accumulated M$118 in Assets, M$97 in Savings Deposits; M$86 in Loans and M$11 in Reserves.

He advised the public to take a moment as they celebrated during the week to reflect on the privileges that Credit Union Members enjoyed, due to their ownership.
