“Today we stand on the threshold of a new era in our development.  Many exciting things are about to happen.  Economically, the island is poised to take off.  We the citizens must be prepared for the opportunities and challenges which will present themselves.  What better preparation can there be than that of our youths being afforded the opportunity to be involved in the research, analysis and discussion of the theme for this year’s library programme” Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Library Services Mr. Joseph Wiltshire said.

This came at the closing ceremony of the first session of the 2008 Summer Environmental Awareness Programme on July 11, 2008 at the St. Georges Branch Library.

The session featured high school students from across the island which was held from July 07 to 11 at the St. George’s Branch Library at Croney’s House in Gingerland under the theme “Our Country our people our future”. The sub theme was “Reminiscing the past, relishing the present, charting the way forward”.

Mr. Wiltshire also spoke of the Library’s dedication to the initiative over the years and commended the staff for their efforts.

“I wish to commend the entire staff of our library services for their continued involvement in the development of our most important resource-our people.  Year after year the library continues to provide meaningful activities for the nation’s youth and this year is no exception.

Minister with responsibility for Lands and Housing, Agriculture, Fisheries and Cooperatives Hon. Robelto Hector hosted his Federal colleague Minister Hon. Cedric Liburd on Nevis on July 11, 2008, to discuss matters related to a proposed fishing complex in Charlestown to be funded by the government of Japan.

In an interview with the Department of Information at the proposed site of the complex, Mr. Hector pointed to it’s benifit to Nevis and cited that the million dollar project had received the blessings of the Federal government.

“We [Nevis] have worked close particularly on this project. We know the benefits of the project to Nevis in terms of enhancing the fishing industry in terms of making sure that our resources are managed in that sustainable way.  Mr. Liburd I welcome you and I thank you so much for the opportunity to come and have a site visit of what is proposed, as your blessing is very important to see the project to its fruition.”

“With regard to the overall satisfaction of the project, it is important for all of us in terms of the consumption of fish as a protein in our diet”¦For the fishermen themselves it is an opportunity for them to increase their catch, it is an opportunity for them to make more money from fishing, it is an opportunity for them to expand their business,” he said.

The Minister explained that the proposed complex would entail a main two storey building which would be outfitted with lockers and storage space for implements and fish and a cistern system which would provide an adequate water supply to support the complex.

Nevis’ Premier Parry On His Two Years In Power

Charlestown, Nevis
July 12, 2008

Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry addressed the Nation Thursday in celebration of the momentous occasion when the people of Nevis returned the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) to office on July 10th, 2006.

“Governments are appointed to serve the people in their best interest. You the people elected us on the basis of the programmes we promoted and articulated in the Peoples Agenda.  Today, I report once again of the stewardship of the Nevis Reformation Party on behalf of the people of Nevis”.

In discussing the achievements of the early days of the NRP, Premier Parry outlined the success of the party with such advancements for Nevis as: Electricity for the island of Nevis, the provision of Roads, Water and Ports under NRP between 1983 and 1992.

Today almost twenty five years after first coming to power, the NRP has embarked on another landmark event by promoting geothermal on the island.

“People in the Caribbean will say geothermal did for Nevis what oil did and continues to do for Trinidad and Tobago and what Tourism did for Barbados. The economic potential for geothermal is so huge, that for decades its impact will continue to reverberate around this region.”

Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for Social Transformation Hon. Hensley Daniel believes that Nevis’ move toward the use of geothermal energy would not only solidify the island’s economic base to facilitate social and economic transformation but would  also solidify the country’s commitment to reduce  global warming and contribute to the Green revolution.

His comment came while he gave support to a landmark Bill, the Nevis Geothermal Resources Development Ordinance, 2008, which was passed in the Nevis Island Assembly on July 08, 2008.

“This is a small contribution to the development of renewable energy, a major contribution to conservation. I believe that the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS) will be proud of our [NIA] new efforts and Nevis may just qualify as a green community.

“This marks a paradigm shift away from global warming with the burning of fossil fluids to the use of alternative and renewable energy.

“This is our way of meeting the requirements set out by the Kyoto Protocol of 1997, in which we [Nevis] along with 179 other countries committed ourselves to reduce emissions of six greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide. We will certainly be able to meet emissions targets by 2012,” he said.
