Nevis Government Makes Land Available For Expansion

Nevis Island's Premier - Joseph Parry

Charlestown, Nevis
August 13, 2008

Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry announced recently, that the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) had taken major steps to extend the Cotton Ground and Barnes Ghaut Villages, which over the years did not have available government owned lands for expansion.

Mr. Parry said since the Nevis Reformation Party-led NIA was elected to office in 2006, the Administration had worked hard to execute a number of programmes that would benefit the people of Nevis, among them the availability of lands in the St. Thomas Parish.

“I have spoken to you in the past about plans and I can tell you that these plans are coming to fruition. I spoke to you about the availability of land and just two weeks ago Dr. Cecil Saunders came here with his brother and they agreed to make available to the government, 1.75 acres of land east of the ball ground.

“The land will be used for the expansion of the ball ground and will be used for low income housing. I am only waiting now for the surveyor… that decision has been made and the playfield in Cotton Ground will be done later this year along with the low income houses,” he said.

In addition, Mr. Parry who is also the Area Representative for St. Thomas Parish said, the Government had acquired 13 other acres of land east of Cotton Ground and was in the process of concluding negotiations, which would lead to a reasonable compensation for the land owners but that was not all.

Another sign of confidence in the economy of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas says Monday’s opening of a branch of RBBT Caribbean in the TDC Mall on the corner of Central and Fort Streets “is timely as St. Kitts and Nevis propels itself forward as the financial capital of the OECS Economic Union.”

“There is no doubt that St. Kitts and Nevis continues to enjoy tremendous confidence from the regional corporate and banking community,” Prime Minister Douglas said.

Dr. Douglas pointed out that with the prospects for a boom in high-end tourism development on the horizon through the expanding Marriott Vacation Homes International investments in the former Angelus Hotel property, the completion of the first villas of the Ocean Edge Villa Hotel development, the fast-tracked activities surrounding the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Resort as part of the St. Christophe Harbour Development in the South East Peninsula and the start of construction of the Silver Reef Development, together with similar activities in Nevis, the opening of the RBBT branch is timely as St. Kitts and Nevis propels itself forward as the financial capital of the OECS Economic Union.

Sun St. Kitts and Nevis and its sister paper the Antigua Sun are praising St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas for assuming the post of Minister of National Security.

In their editorial for today (Wednesday) entitled “Who should lead the fight,” Sun St. Kitts/Nevis and the Antigua Sun said other Caribbean leaders need to jump into the trenches and lead from the front like Prime Minister Douglas.

Both papers noted that in several Caribbean jurisdictions, the responsibility of keeping the criminals at bay has been placed in the trust of several people and this appears to be adequate once crime is being kept under control.

“But when criminal activity becomes the order of the day, no other public servant will be expected to hold the reins of responsibility but the chief servant ““ in our jurisdiction the prime minister,” said Sun St. Kitts/Nevis and the Antigua Sun, adding: “This is why in our estimation, Prime Minister of St. Kitts/Nevis, Dr. Denzil Douglas, made the right move to take control of the national security portfolio following the resignation of Dwyer Astaphan.”

“We would want to suggest that the prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda (Hon. Baldwin Spencer) might not be too far away from assuming a similar role, understanding that the situation now calls for his close attention and that none can be expected to bring things back to order but he, since so many citizens of the country had put their faith in him to lead them in several ways,” said the editorial.
