Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Joseph Parry, received the keys and cut the ribbon to commission a top of the line US$575,000, 2008 E 1 Titan 6×6 Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting appliance on August 14, 2008 at the Airport at Newcastle.

The event which took place against the backdrop of distant lightening and thunder signaled the increased operating standard of the traveling facility to the new level 8, up from level 5.

An elated Premier Parry told those gathered to witness the occasion that the new fire tender was a demonstration of willingness of the Nevis reformation Party-led Nevis Island Administration (NIA) to spend money, to ensure that the airport would remain open at all times and to avoid a reoccurrence of the events of January 27 to February 13 2008, which left the facility’s operations level downgraded, due to crippling engine problems with the only fire tender stationed there. A problem he said that had been inherited from the former administration.

“I am very happy this afternoon to stand here before you with this truck in the background. It is a brand new truck which has been brought here by the Nevis Island Administration”¦We decided to spend the money, we decided we wanted to have a truck to bring the services up to grade five so that the airport can be opened at all times”¦We have ensured today that the [American] Eagle would land at anytime, once the Eagle wishes to come to Nevis and to this airport,” he said.

Chairman of Culturama 2008  and Advisor on Culture in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Mr. Halsted “Sooty” Byron, issued a call to the public to support the youth in particular when they indulged in all things positive, rather than seek stall their progress.

During an interview with the Department of Information on August 14, 2008, Mr. Byron made reference to Nevis youngest ever Senior Kaiso Monarch De Inspirer (Master Husani Paris), who for some members of the public, had echoed sentiments that the 14 year old was too young to compete with the adult contenders.

“It is important for us to give full support to the youths, especially when they are involved in things positive. Ever so often, in every sphere of life, a young person would come through and outperform others in sports, the arts, culture in everything.

“Especially in these times where there are so many negatives associated with our young people, we need to give the encouragement to those who are involved in positive thing. Do not hold back the youths we need the youths to participate,” he said.

Meantime, Husani’s mother Ms. Julitta Paris, echoed similar sentiments when she spoke to the Department of Information on August 13, 2008, after her return to Nevis. She had accompanied her son to Anguilla, where he carried out his first tour of duty last weekend to represent the island at a Leeward Islands calypso contest.

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said Thursday that in spite of the global upheavals that make the news headlines every day, the twin-island Federation continues to grow steadily.

“Our financial institutions remain strong, and investors ““ local and foreign ““ continue to place great confidence in the growth prospects of our Federation,” Prime Minister Douglas told the opening ceremony of the 2008 National Consultation on the Economy.

Prime Minister Douglas pointed to the continued development of the Marriot expansion plans that will see more than 300 additional hotel rooms added to St. Kitts and Nevis.

“The Kiawah group is still working steadfastly to expeditiously commence construction on the Mandarin Oriental Hotel as the first phase of a comprehensive development project that will transform the entire Southeast Peninsula into a world class tourism development capable of competing with any similar development on the face of the globe,” Dr. Douglas said, adding: “We cannot take our progress for granted.”

He pointed out that St. Kitts and Nevis as a small nation continues to be extremely vulnerable. “Indeed, even the global experts seem unsure as to how long the global credit crisis and the resulting economic slowdown will last. Hence, we cannot be certain that we will not be affected even more severely if these global problems are prolonged. We must therefore devise strategies aimed at mitigating, to a significant degree, the risk associated with the tumultuous changes in the global environment,” Dr. Douglas told the 200 participants drawn from the Federal Government and Nevis Island Administration, the National Assembly and the Nevis Island Assembly as well as representatives from several organisations including the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, bankers, the Contractors Association, the Association of Disabled Persons, students of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College and the he Hotel and Tourism Association.
