The third annual Sea Turtle Camp organised by the Four Seasons Resort Nevis (FSRN) and the Nevis Turtle Group (NTG) saw its first highlight on July 22, when it witnessed the tagging, naming and releasing of a Hawksbill sea turtle into the ocean, on the south side of the Four Seasons pier on Pinney’s Beach.

The turtle was found while nesting around 11 PM on Monday July 21, at Jones Beach by Founder and President of the NTG Mr. Lemuel Pemberton.

Supervisor of the Kids For All Seasons (KFAS) Department at FSRN and coordinator of the Sea Turtle Camp Mrs. Barbara James, spoke of the importance of finding a turtle to the participants of the camp.

“It is very good that on the first day of the Camp the kids get to see the turtle that we found last night on Jones Beach and see it being released,” she said.

Mrs. James also gave an overview of this year’s Camp.

“We are gonna have 80 kids this year.  As a matter of fact we have three days this week.  We have a session in the morning from nine to 12, a session in the afternoon from 1 PM to 4 PM and then next week Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we’re gonna have another session in the morning and in the afternoon, so we are trying to at least cater for 80 kids,” she said.

Executive Director of the non-profit organization Caribbean Conservation Corporation Mr. David Godfrey who was in Nevis to assist with the turtle awareness initiative, witnessed the capture of the turtle and reflected on it.

Nevis Will Make Money From Geothermal, Says Minister

Nevis Children Watch Geothermal Presentation

In a very interactive session with primary school students, Jr. Minister with responsibility for Natural Resources and the Environment in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Carlisle Powell addressed the status of the island’s geothermal project and told them that Nevis stood to benefit financially from it.

This came on July 17, at the Charlestown Secondary School’s Auditorium during the Nevis Public Library’s Annual Environmental Awareness Programme. The participants aged nine to 12 years, were anxious to learn more about the project and asked Minister Powell several questions including whether Nevis would make money from geothermal energy.

“With geothermal energy, once you start selling to the other islands, Nevis will be making monies from royalty.  Royalty is just a nice word for a tax.  It’s as simple as that and so (from) all the current that is produced and sold; Nevis will be getting a tax and when you sell the electricity outside of St. Kitts and Nevis the tax is going to be higher so you will be making monies from that.

“The second way that Nevis will be making money is that once West Indies Power Limited (WIPL) would have paid off their initial loans then the Government of Nevis will be expecting to get a share of the profits.  So that if they are making $200 million a year, Nevis expects to get a fair share of whatever monies they make so yes Nevis will be making more money with geothermal energy,” Minister Powell said and expressed his joy in the participants’ interest.

St. Kitts and Nevis remains a top draw for sports tourism as numbers indicate another record setting year.

A twenty-seven member cricket team including 16 officials out of Canada was the latest to visit the Federation on a July 2 to 10 tour.

Brian Hale, President and Coach of the Toronto Cricket Academy gave some insight on his team stating that he founded the institution in 1990. They started international tours in 2000 and have visited several territories including California, Lancashire, Somerset, Guyana, Trinidad and Barbados.

When asked about his impression of Warner Park, he said that the facility has to be rated as “one of the finest in this region.” “I like it because it suits the island “¦ and it’s properly maintained. I think this is the pride of the island,” he stressed.

Having visited 20 years ago to represent his country in a cricket match against the Windward Islands, Hale stated that has been a tremendous difference.
