The St. Kitts Mandarin is among the 21 hotels and 18 properties in the pipeline, as the Mandarin Oriental group is embarking on an unprecedented level of growth in the next three years, especially in the Americas.

Mandarin Oriental, who just opened its first Mexico property this year, will also look to expand their portfolio in that region with Costa Rica, Grand Cayman, and St. Kitts.

Last year, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel announced in New York and St. Kitts its intention to establish a luxury hotel resort in St. Kitts and Nevis which it expects will become its flagship resort in the Caribbean.

Firesky Ventures, Auberge Resorts and Kiawah Development Partners unveiled a comprehensive tourism development programme for the Southeast Peninsula, that would launch the Federation to the forefront of the high-end, luxury sector of the Caribbean tourism market.

With the challenges presently facing regional governments, St. Kitts and Nevis and other member nations of the Caribbean Community are working steadfastly to do what is in their power to maintain sustainability of their economies.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas in an address at the launching of a 500 low-income home project called for the growing of food in backyards, adherence to several conservation measures, prudent fiscal policies and increased cooperation between government and civil society.

“There are many challenges that small states like ours are currently experiencing. Globally, the cost of living is rising, and economies and social structures face serious difficulties every day. In some countries, unrest has been experienced. Here in St. Kitts and Nevis your Government is doing what is absolutely necessary to ensure that these things do not happen here in St. Kitts and Nevis,’ said Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

Dr. Douglas admitted that Caribbean Governments cannot do it alone and added that “every citizen and resident must become responsible in terms of behaviour.”

Residents of Nevis would this week receive free medical care through the collaborative efforts of the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) Ministry of Health and the Taiwan Mobile Medical Mission (TMMM).

In a brief ceremony to mark the four-day medical initiative held at the Administrative Department of the Alexandra Hospital, on July 14, 2008, Minister of Health in the NIA Hon. Hensley Daniel recorded his gratitude to the TMMM for its generosity.

“We in Nevis, in the government of which I’m apart, we have raised the bar and are working to keep health on a priority. Being in government over the last two years, matters relating to resources for health have taken up quite a bit of our attention and so we want to say to the Taiwanese that we shall find [partner] with our medical professionals and they will advise us and that you can expect from us new ways in which we can collaborate and cooperate towards the resolution of health challenges in Nevis,” Mr. Daniel said.

He spoke of other possible collaborative efforts that could be facilitated between the TMMM and the NIA.

“Outside of a one off visit every year, you can expect from us some sort of formal proposal in which we can address, whether its issues of Human Resource Development, whether its issues of specialised care, we certainly would want to advance the relationship to something which would be done to the benefit of the wider public,” he said.

A EC$50 million low income housing programme represents the dreams and aspirations on hundreds of families in the twin-island Federation.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said the homes when completed will be more than the provision of shelter for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“Rather, it carries the dreams and aspirations of many here in Half Way Tree, in Old Road, Middle Island, Challengers and in the entire country for a brighter future under a caring St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government,” said Dr. Douglas, who added that the 500-homes programme is a further fulfillment of  a promise made to the people to enhance the opportunities to access housing in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Prime Minister Douglas reaffirmed his government’s commitment to continue to respond to the demands for housing in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“We believe that it is important to empower people through the acquisition of property. In fact, this EC$50 million housing project that is starting here in Half Way Tree is designed for persons who fall into the lower-income category. The design is aimed at ensuring that homes are affordable to our people,” he said.

Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for Social Transformation Hon. Hensley Daniel believes that Nevis’ move toward the use of geothermal energy would not only solidify the island’s economic base to facilitate social and economic transformation but would  also solidify the country’s commitment to reduce  global warming and contribute to the Green revolution.

His comment came while he gave support to a landmark Bill, the Nevis Geothermal Resources Development Ordinance, 2008, which was passed in the Nevis Island Assembly on July 08, 2008.

“This is a small contribution to the development of renewable energy, a major contribution to conservation. I believe that the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society (NHCS) will be proud of our [NIA] new efforts and Nevis may just qualify as a green community.

“This marks a paradigm shift away from global warming with the burning of fossil fluids to the use of alternative and renewable energy.

“This is our way of meeting the requirements set out by the Kyoto Protocol of 1997, in which we [Nevis] along with 179 other countries committed ourselves to reduce emissions of six greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide. We will certainly be able to meet emissions targets by 2012,” he said.
