Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry returned to the Federation on Sunday, May 25th from St. Lucia, where he attended the organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) forty-seventh meeting.  The meeting was held at the St. Lucia Bay Gardens Resort in Rodney Bay from May 23- 24, 2008.

While attending the two-day meeting for Heads of Government at OECS level, the Premier engaged in discussions, which he has described as “of paramount importance.”  Among the more pertinent issues were discussions on the economic union of the OECS.  Premier Parry indicated that during the discourse, Heads of Government examined proposals in an effort to better understand the implications and to make sure that the political power remains in the hands of the Heads of Government, rather than be “transferred to bureaucrats.”

During the meeting, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Hon. Ralph Gonsalves offered the assistance of nurses to several countries. Premier Parry is presently exploring the possibility of receiving nurses from St. Vincent and the Grenadines while Nevis continues to train local persons to fill the positions.

Additionally, there were serious discussions on food prices and production levels on the OECS and Caribbean countries. Recently, the Federal Government and the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) have removed dues and taxes from some basic food items to make life easier for residents of the Federation.

Charlestown, Nevis
May 22, 2008

Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance in the Nevis Island Administration Hon. Joseph Parry received commendations from United States Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Her Excellency Mrs. Mary Ourisman, for having launched the landmark Nevis Investment Promotion Agency (NIPA).

During a ceremony to mark the occasion at the Old Manor Hotel on May 21, 2008, the Ambassador expressed that view that the new agency would enable the government promote and to coordinate investments.

“I wish to congratulate you Premier Parry on this launch of the Nevis Investment Promotion Agency. This new body will enable your island’s Administration to better promote and to coordinate investments and to create economic opportunities for all of your citizens,” she said.

Mrs. Ourisman noted that the new measures to encourage investment on the island coupled with its new found renewable energy resources would propel Nevis into a new era of prosperity.

“I believe that your newly discovered alternative energy resources in the form of geothermal energy, combined with your strong push to open Nevis to high quality foreign investment, will combine to create a new era, a new era of economic growth and job opportunities for all Nevisians,” she said.

The Ambassador described the occasion as one of importance because it had become clear that over the years that the focus of development across the region had moved away from the traditional sectors and had become increasingly focused on international competitiveness and the attraction of foreign investment.

She said St. Kitts and Nevis had been an important regional leader for having charted that bold new course and explained that the measures put in place could only serve to enjoy the benefits of the global trade system.

“Saint Kitts and Nevis in fact has been an important regional leader in charting that bold new course that ranks 85, quite impressive! In these circumstances, one of the primary challenges which policy decision makers, entrepreneurs and managers face is to device mechanisms that stimulate economic growth, improved productivity and provide employment opportunities to their citizens.

Nevis Premier Parry

Nevis’ Premier – Hon. Joseph Parry

Charlestown, Nevis
May 21, 2008

Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry gave an address on Tuesday, May 20th at the opening ceremony of the medical clinic sponsored by the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) Mission in collaboration with Friend Ships, a charitable medical organization based in the United States.

“It was in 1984 that TBN came to the shores of Nevis.  Many things happened in that year when the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) brought TBN to the island of Nevis,” stated Premier Parry.  He indicated that TBN provided an additional service to the island by bringing the news, various issues and opinions to the people of Nevis. They also provided jobs and it made their mark in Nevisian society.

“The Society needs examples just like we need to reach out to the Caribbean and the rest of the World.  Young people have experienced the feeling of disillusionment and they feel cheated.  They are feeling a lack of attention from parents and teachers and they are crying out for role models and good examples in our society,” articulated Premier Parry.

The Friend Ships Super Clinics are here on Nevis to provide medical, eye and dental care, free of change from May 20- 24, 2008. Their advance team has set up the mission with government officials and church leaders.

The M.V Hopes, which houses Friend Ships, brought in several “Super Clinics”, which are 20 ft. shipping containers equipped as field clinics. They were moved into place along with large tents, seating, portable toilets and food preparation equipment.

Numerous doctors, nurses and dentists, trained and licensed in the United States, New Zealand and Australia, form part of the medical team. The ship also brought in a 206 Bell Jet Helicopter to support the operations

A five day schedule is established from 9a.m- 5p.m every day, colour coded bracelets (a colour is dedicated to a specific day’s entrance) were given to persons from churches on the island. The clinic can facilitate as many as 300-500 patients a day.
