Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry, is of the view that geothermal energy will “change the face of the country with more jobs and cheaper electricity!” He made the statement as he delivered the Keynote Address at the 30th Anniversary Dinner of the Nevis Canada Association (NEVCAN), in Toronto on Saturday, October 25th.

According to Premier Parry, Geothermal would assist in lowering the government’s subsidies to the public debt, attracting industries in search of cheap power and removing a need for large sums of money to be spent annually on diesel for power generation.

“As we take steps to make ourselves strong economically and socially, we are fortunate to have discovered geothermal energy,” said Premier Parry.

Mr. Parry also told the very appreciative audience that fellow Nevisians should not stand aside and criticize; but instead, believe in the Federation’s motto of Country above self and support any Government in power, once the country is developing for the better. He continued by saying, “It doesn’t matter who was in Government and did nothing about Geothermal, it is more important that someone is doing something about Geothermal today.”

The audience applauded and they continued to cheer as the Premier asked the crowd to rally around the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), as the Nevis Reformation Party led Government seeks to move the island forward by diversifying the Economy.

Nevis’ geothermal energy exploration may provide a solution to high energy prices.

This is the view of St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas following his first visit to Hamilton Estate to see the drilling exercise being undertaken by the West Indies Power (WIP). Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry invited Prime Minister Douglas to visit the project during his tour of areas in Nevis affected by the recent passage of Hurricane Omar.

“I am very, very impressed, very hopeful, that one of the serious challenges that we face as a people, as a nation, is the escalating high energy prices, that we may be able in the not too distant future, to provide a solution to this problem through the possibilities of geothermal energy that eventually will come to the island of Nevis and will be able to be I am sure, shared by the people of St. Kitts and Nevis generally and the people of the Caribbean islands, whom I am sure will benefit from this very important exploration that is taking place here in the Hamilton Estate area,” said Prime Minister Douglas at a post tour press conference.

Nevis’ Geothermal Energy Estimated At Hundreds of Megawatts

Nevis Island's Geothermal Well # 3

October 17, 2008

Officials of West Indies Power (WIP) have confirmed that at least two geothermal drill sites on Nevis have the capacity to produce hundreds of megawatts of geothermal energy.

The confirmation came on October 16, hours after the passage of Hurricane Omar, when WIP’s Nevis 3 well at Hamilton Estate, came alive with steam.

“The geothermal reservoir that exists between Spring Hill and Hamilton Estates contains several hundred megawatts of geothermal production capacity,” WIP’s Chef Executive Officer (CEO) Mr. Kerry McDonald said.

According to Mr. McDonald, the high temperatures at Nevis 3 at Hamilton Estate which is located at 2.5miles south of Nevis 1 at Spring Hill where steam and high temperatures were also found, confirmed the existence of a continuous geothermal reservoir between the two wells.

The NIA had given WIP the authority to explore the geothermal reservoir of the island in February 2007, in its efforts to provide cheaper electricity and reduce the cost of living for Nevisians.
