Caribbean Leaders Discuss Numerous Crime Issues

A number of agreements will be signed to fight human trafficking, drug trafficking and other crimes in the Caribbean region.

Caribbean leaders at the 13th Special Meeting in Trinidad and Tobago last weekend agreed to sign the Maritime and Airspace Security Cooperation Agreement by July this year, engage international partners, particularly the United States of America, with respect to the implications for the Region of their anti-narcotics efforts in Central America and the Pacific Coast and immediately draft model national legislation for enactment by Member States.

With regard to intelligence and information sharing, it was agreed to conduct of a region-wide information campaign against crime to be facilitated by CARICOM Secretariat; the retooling, retraining, and realignment of national and regional Intelligence Units to assist law enforcement agencies in the fight against Crime and utilise current facilities such as the Regional Intelligence Fusion Centre (RIFC), the Joint Regional Communications Centre (JRCC) and the CARICOM Watch List.

On the matter dealing with the procurement of equipment, Caribbean leaders agreed to formulate a strategy for information sharing in the procurement of assets among military and law enforcement entities in Member States; assign a Working Group to create an index/inventory of existing resources in the Region; identify the gaps therein and recommend equipment to fill the gaps identified.

Caribbean Leaders To Combat Rising Regional Crime

Caribbean leaders have agreed on a number of measures to combat rising crime in the region.

St. Kits and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and other Caribbean leaders during the 13th Special Meeting in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, on 4-5 April 2008 ventilated the crime and security issues facing the Region and to agreed on a Strategy and Plan of Action to stem the rising tide of violent criminality.

Heads of Government received proposals from the Extra-ordinary Joint Meeting of the Standing Committees of Commissioners of Police and of Military Chiefs; the Security Policy and Advisory Committee (SEPAC); and the Council of Ministers with Responsibility for National Security and Laws Enforcement (CONSLE).

It was agreed that, building on the legacy of the success of the Security Co-operation arrangements put in place for the Cricket World Cup 2007, some of the elements would be upgraded and expanded on a permanent basis.

Nevis Government Calls For Crackdown On Youth Crime

The month of April has been designated youth month on Nevis and Minister of Youth Development, the Hon. Hensley Daniel issued a call to help young people to turn away from crime, violence, and drug abuse. The minister made the call while he delivered a televised address on Tuesday, April 1st to officially launch activities to celebrate youth month 2008.
 
He said these social-ills had a negative impact on the young and collectively Nevisians must move to reduce these incidences and noted that Youth Month afforded the opportunity to call into question, or reflect on what had been done to promote and sustain youth development. 
 
“I want to use the occasion of Youth Month to enlist the support of the  family, the school, the church and the community in helping to sustain the Judeo-Christian values on which our society is founded.  The values are coming under threat ““ the values of discipline, hard-work and honesty.  I call upon the adults in the society to hold on to these values so that today’s young can lead by example.
 
“The adults must help to harness the energies of the young and channel them into productive pursuits. We have to maintain our moral and ethical standards to serve as a frame of reference for our young people.  The advancement of Nevis depends less on its ability to provide economic benefits and more on its moral and spiritual values,” he said.
