Minister of Agriculture in the Nevis Island Administration Hon. Robelto Hector expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Department of Agriculture on Nevis  for its successful revival of cotton production after a four year absence. The crop he said was one filled with export potential for the island.

The Minister made the comment on May 19, 2008, while he toured the Sea Island Cotton ginning operations at the New River Ginnery. He was accompanied by Director of Agriculture on Nevis Dr. Kelvin Daly and Small Farm Equipment Pool Manager Mr. John Parris, overseer of the ginning operations.

“I am extremely happy with the performance of the Department in realising a cotton crop this year. As I have said, we must export something and truly we are seeing once again the revival of an export crop which can generate foreign exchange for this country.

“As a government we are committed. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Director, the Ministry of Agriculture and the farmers who participated in making this crop a success,” he said.

Dr. Daly explained that the cotton was being prepared for export sometime during the summer months and explained that the crop was a successful one when considered that they were out of production for four years and the Department began the project from scratch in 2007.

Despite the success of the crop, he pointed to a number of challenges which had been encountered along the way.

National Park Service Moves Alexander Hamilton’s House

Alexander Hamilton’s House

Alexander Hamilton lived at this New York City address from 1802 until 1804; the house will soon be moved.

Credit: National Park Service The National Park Service, which has owned the New York City home of Alexander Hamilton since 1962, has decided to to move the Grange, where one of America’s first constitutional lawyers, the founder of the Bank of New York and the New York Post, and the first United States Secretary of Treasury lived from 1802-1804.

The Greek revival house, designated a National Historical Landmark in 1960, was built in 1802 on a promontory that provided panoramic views. Designed by John McComb Jr., who designed New York’s City Hall and Princeton Theological Seminary, the 1802 Grange is the only remaining example of his residential buildings.

The relocation process began in 1995, when the park service concluded a General Management Plan that recommended that the Grange be relocated and restored in the northwest corner of St. Nicholas Park on land that had been part of Hamilton’s original 32-acre estate. Planning for the project began in 2004, construction began in November 2007, and the building is expected to be completed in Spring 2009. The actual move is estimated to take approximately 12-15 days, and Congress has predicted that it will cost about $8.2 million.

Singing Sandra To Perform In St. Kitts – Nevis

Singing Sandra On Stage – Always Regally Dressed

Basseterre, St.Kitts – Nevis
May 19th 2008

Calypso music’s biggest female icon, Singing Sandra, was announced today as a special guest performer at this weekend’s much anticipated and talked about Miss Personality and Marvellous Queen and Ring Bang Calypso Show. Born Sandra Des Vignes, the talented singer is well known for her nurturing approach and maternal counsel to Caribbean. “I am very excited about performing in St.Kitts,” Sandra said during a phone interview.

Sandra has come a long way since her debut at Sparrow’s Young Brigade tent in 1984.

From taking the calypso stage against the wishes of a concerned father to her rise to royalty status in the genre, the two-time national calypso monarch continues to defy all odds. While at Young Brigade she copped both the local National Calypso Queen and St Maarten Queen of the World titles in 1987 with Sexy Employees, more popularly known as Die With My Dignity. The song mirrored Sandra’s image and spiritually strong moral standing and was an immediate hit with women in society who identified with the images of male chauvinism in the workplace. “”˜You could keep your money, I go keep my honey and die with my dignity’

In 1991, she took her career a step further with the formation of the United Sisters quartet that featured, along with Sandra, calypsonians Marvellous Marva, Tigress and the now-deceased Lady B. The group, all graduates of the Best Village programme, was a hit with Caribbean calypso fans and represented feminine strength in a time when women were either too afraid or timid to hold the spotlight. They went on to win the Trinidad National Song Festival and placed second in the Caribbean Song Festival that same year with “Ambataila Woman” penned by Lady B.
