Over a thousand young people paraded through the streets of Basseterre on Wednesday as celebrations for the silver jubilee Independence anniversary of St. Kitts and Nevis continue.

The march climaxed the Youth Rally which saw expressions of national pride in song, dance, poetry and drama. Director of Youth Geoffrey Hanley said that there were over 500 young people from various youth groups, schools and related organizations participating in the event.

The band display by the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force Band and the Seventh Day Adventist Pathfinders drum corps, which incorporated scenes from the movie “Drumline” in their performance, set the mood for the other acts that followed at the rally held at Warner Park. An All Star musical by local hip-hop artiste Z-dan, calypsonian Kibianne, gospel rocker Pepper Ranks, folk singer Grace Richardson and others energized the crowd. Other notable performances included a drama presentation by Radaun Thomas, an inspirational song by Karina Phillip, as well as a spirited rendition of “I Can Make It” by a 40-male strong choir from the St. Peters Eagle Boys Club.

Minister with responsibility for Housing and Lands on Nevis Hon. Robelto Hector, said he was satisfied with the direction the housing revolution on Nevis had taken.

Mr. Hector made the remark on September 10, 2008, during an interview with the Department of Information. He said two years ago when the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP)-led Nevis Island Administration (NIA) entered office, it recognised the need to make affordable housing available to every strata of the community.

“I am happy to see the housing programme is alive and active and the people of Nevis are benefiting,” he said.

Through the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation (NHLDC) the NIA embarked on a comprehensive programme of home construction.

Mr. Hector also explained, that to date a number of persons had benefited from the housing programme and pointed to a special scheme designed for persons in the Administration’s employ, for the first time in the island’s history.

“Under the Civil service Mortgage Scheme facilitated by the Nevis Corporative Credit Union, 28 persons have been approved for housing loans – Civil Servants as well as Non-Established workers who have been given such benefits as established workers – and I am satisfied with the project,” he said.

Government Ministers in St. Kitts wrapped up two days of visits to primary and secondary schools and the C.F.B. College on Tuesday, and Minister of State for Information Honourable Nigel Carty described the event as “enjoyable and nationalistically stirring.”

The visits to the educational institutions are done every year at Independence time although the hectic schedule was scaled down a few years ago, to include secondary schools only. As this year’s occasion marks the silver jubilee anniversary of Independence of St. Kitts and Nevis, Minister Carty said that it was important for the touring party headed by Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Denzil L. Douglas to visit all thirty schools.

Appearing on this week’s edition of Perspectives, the Minister of State for Information said the teachers, students and parents on hand were assured of Government’s commitment to provide quality education.

“There was a very strong message that this is the 25th Anniversary of Independence. We have achieved a great deal through the hard work of our forebearers and persons who went before us in leading the government of St. Kitts and Nevis,” he explained.
