Pembroke Estate’s Owner Evicts Nevis Homeowners

Charlestown, Nevis
October 3, 2008

The Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation (NHLDC) came to the assistance of some Brown Hill residents, who recently received eviction notices from a private landowner at Pembroke Estate.

Manager Mr. Eustace Nisbett Jr. said on October 3, during a visit to the estate, that the Corporation was made aware of the situation and moved swiftly to relocate the residents to a new housing area at Low Ground. The move he said was in keeping with the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) plan to provide proper social transformation. The estate has four residential structures and one business.

Basseterre, St. Kitts
October 03, 2008 (SKNIS)

A decision on the rise in the minimum wage paid to workers in St. Kitts and Nevis is due soon, perhaps as early as the end of the month.

Minister of Finance Honourable Dr. Timothy Harris made this announcement at a press conference at the Ministry of Finance, on Thursday. He noted that the weekly Cabinet meeting on Monday saw deliberations on the matter but a final decision has not been reached.

“I feel comfortable [in saying] that in a [few] weeks the public will be made aware of what the new minimum wage will be in the Federation,” he stated.

The minimum wage is currently paid at $6.25 an hour (US $2.35). This translates into a base salary of $250.00 per week (US $94.30) for a minimum wage earner that works the standard 40 hours.
