The Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation (NHLDC) came to the assistance of some Brown Hill residents, who recently received eviction notices from a private landowner at Pembroke Estate.
Manager Mr. Eustace Nisbett Jr. said on October 3, during a visit to the estate, that the Corporation was made aware of the situation and moved swiftly to relocate the residents to a new housing area at Low Ground. The move he said was in keeping with the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) plan to provide proper social transformation. The estate has four residential structures and one business.
“Pembroke Estate as we know it is a privately owned property and has been so for a number of years and remains in that status today. Unfortunately, there are a number of persons who would have taken up residence and have conducted business in some cases on this property,” he said.
Mr. Nisbett explained that in some cases, land space would be provided but in cases where land space was not an issue, the Corporation would provide any necessary assistance to aid the relocation process.
Seventy-six year old Ms. Idita Liburd a resident on the estate since she was five years told, the Department of Information that the thought of having to leave the estate was emotionally difficult for her but she was happy for the assistance offered to her by the NIA through the NHLDC.
“I really glad for the help because really if I been stay the courts I don’t have no money to pay lawyer and buy here so I really thank you all for the help,” she said.
Mr. Edward Powell another resident on the estate related his experience.
“The property I am living in at the moment is my aunty property, and I am there over a year now. I got a letter from the lawyer stating we should move on the 15th of last month but I wrote to her and she gave me an extended time of three months”.
“I also spoke with Mr. Nisbett concerning the matter and I am really thankful for the help that he offered. I am really thankful for the help coming towards me,” he said.
