Agriculture Officials Need Assistance To Fight Lethal Yellowing

CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (November 02, 2006)
The Ministry and Department of Agriculture are hopeful they would recieve positive word from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), to assist with the fight against the further spread of the Lethal Yellowing, a disease which has affected coconut trees in Nevis.
 
Mr Keithley Amory Deputy Director of Agriculture in a recent interview told the Government Information Service (GIS) that in a move to address the incurable disease which affected coconut and other palm trees, the Nevis Island Administration had sought assistance from the United Nations organisation to assess the status of the infection and to give some technical assistance. “We are really grateful for the assistance of FAO and we are hoping this does qualify for the proposed project,” he said.

Nevis Economy On Track

Budget Analyst in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Ms. Hazel Brandy, disclosed that Nevis’ fiscal performance was moving in the right direction, her assessment was based on an unofficial report of the International Monetary Fund Mission 2006.

Ms. Brandy was at the time addressing a number of senior civil servants and ministers in the NIA, at a pre estimate budget meeting at the Nevis Co Operative Credit Union Conference Room on Monday October 30, 2006. The meeting was designed to foster closer dialogue between heads of departments, Permanent Secretaries and the Ministry of Finance, to give an updated fiscal position on the government and to address concerns on the preparation of the 2007 Budget which is due in December, 2006.

Teachers Told To Give Of Themselves Freely To Students

CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (October30, 2006)
Teachers on Nevis received sound advice on Friday October 27, 2006, when retired teacher and Mr Anthony Jones urged them to continue to give freely to children who came to school on a daily basis, mindful that they as teachers had much to give.
 
Mr Jones was at the time addressing hundreds of teachers on Nevis after he was named their honouree at the 22nd Annual Professional Day hosted by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Nevis Teachers Union. The event was held at the Eden Brown Church of God Conference Room. This year’s theme was “Quality Teachers for Quality Education Supporting Teaching Excellence”.
