June 6, 2008

Reaching Nisbet Plantation Beach Club, the Caribbean’s #1 Luxury Hotel according to TripAdvisor’s 2008 Travelers’ Choice Awards, is easier than ever with free airport transfers available in July. Combined with the Sultry Summer Savings, this offer is a rare opportunity.

For all Nisbet Plantation guests arriving in July and staying six or more nights, the hotel will pre-arrange free airport transfers. Guests will receive complimentary round-trip transportation for two (per room) from either the Nevis airport (NEV) or St. Kitts airport (SKB)*.

To celebrate summer Nisbet makes it easier than ever to get to and offers great summer rates
As always, a Nisbet greeter will meet guests at the airport (hence the reason for advance arrangements) and personally assist them in getting to Nisbet Plantation. From the Nevis airport, Nisbet is a short 10-minute taxi ride. From St. Kitts airport (with recent new non-stops from New York and Atlanta), the primary transport is a refreshing water taxi ride. Guests are whisked by taxi from the airport to the water taxi and picked up by a taxi in Nevis. All in all, it’s about 45 minutes and a $275 value.

“To celebrate summer Nisbet makes it easier than ever to get to and offers great summer rates,” says Nisbet General Manager Glen Hurd. “Many of our guests insist that reaching Nisbet by water is the most scenic and romantic way to arrive.” Nisbet is extending this offer to any guest flying into St. Kitts or Nevis — guests must book at least six nights and arrive in July to receive two round-trip transfers.

*For nighttime transports after 6 p.m., there is a $50 charge per person.

In addition to the free transfers, guests can take advantage of the Sultry Summer Savings special and save up to 20% off the lowest rates of the year depending on the length of stay:

Basseterre, Saint Kitts – Nevis
June 05, 2008 (CUOPM)

Carib Brewery (St. Kitts & Nevis) Limited is reporting an EC$5.8 million profit before tax for 2007, up EC$1.6 million compared to the previous year.

According to the Annual Report released at the company’s 48th Annual General Meeting, sales in 2007 increased by 10 percent to EC$30.3 million.

“Our increase in revenue was in part, the result of an increase in prices, the first the brewery has implemented in over 10 years. Price increases were required to help mitigate the effect of global increase in the price of raw materials, utilities and fuel for our plant,” said Chairman Andrew Sabga.

He said Carib Brewery (St. Kitts & Nevis) Limited made substantial investments to improve production efficiencies through the installation of a new pasteurizer and boiler resulting in considerable savings in utility costs and a 20 percent increase in bottling capacity.

In 2008 the local company will continue to invest in a new plant by installing a new refrigeration unit and malt handling system in order to further enhance its capacity and quality as it seeks new exports markets. Markets include Tortola, St. Maarten, Barbados and islands in the OECS.

The Department of Agriculture has placed peanut production back on the front burner, with timely research assistance from the Taiwan Technical Mission.

At the time, the Ambassador was commenting at the start of a field tour of the Taiwanese Technical Mission demonstration farm at Needsmust. Farmers and media personnel were provided a full tour of the facility to see first-hand the range of research projects being undertaken.

Ambassador Wu expressed confidence that a high yield variety would be very profitable for farmers. Indicating that in a diversified economy, agriculture is still important in terms of food sustainability and food substitution, He said the Technical Mission agriculture research facility was committed to the assistance in the nation’s diversification of its agriculture in the pursuit of food sustainability in St. Kitts and Nevis, as the country addresses trade imbalances.

Ambassador Wu commented that it was possible to achieve higher production levels. “We have fertile land. We have people. We can grow everything here”¦Our intention is to collaborate with the St. Kitts and Nevis Government and people to improve agricultural production to enable the option of import substitution. Our idea is to help utilize the total area of agricultural lands in a way that attracts ambitious young farmers to do business on a full-time basis, as the sector works towards self-sufficiency and export opportunities.”

Residents of St. Paul’s were the first to benefit from a community outreach programme initiated by the Department of Culture.

“In evaluating our programme of activities, we found out that we were not reaching a [desired] cross section of the community,” Director of Culture Creighton Pencheon explained on this week’s edition of the radio magazine Perspectives. “There was a need for us to extend some of our programmes beyond the normal working hours and [branch out more] in the field in order to reach more people. We are hoping that in so doing we will serve to inspire young people to harness the skills of the performing arts.”

He added that this was a good way to decentralize activities from the capital, Basseterre, and give rural children an opportunity to see and learn from the veteran performers.

During the interview with SKNIS, Mr. Pencheon explained that dancers and drummers from the Okolo Tegremantine Arts Theater accompanied himself and staff members including Dance Specialist Lorna “˜Ava’ Henry, Drumming Specialist Royd Phipps and Music Specialist Nigel Williams to the session at the St. Paul’s Primary School. He said the young students showed a keen interest in learning the art form.

“It was quite a success. We had a nice interactive session,” he stated.  “The dancers took the students through various dance routines and they had a wonderful time.”
