The Ministry of Foreign Affiars said Tuesday it is in communication with the authorities in Mexico to ensure the safety of its students studying in the Central American country following the outbreak of the swine flu.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Astona Browne said contact was made on Monday with the St. Lucia-based Mexican Ambassador accredited to St. Kitts and Nevis to ensure that the local students were safe and were informed that there was a shortage of masks in Mexico.

“We are continuing to dialogue with the Mexican authorities on the best course of action to ensure the well being of our students in Mexico,” said Mrs. Browne, who said the Ministry has also been in contact with some of the students.

Mrs. Browne said the Mexican authorities have given an assurance that the local students will be issued with masks, free of cost, as soon as they become available.

She said all the students will be contacted by Wednesday to relay the relevant information.
