Charlestown, Nevis
December 21, 2009
The Ministry of Social Development in the Nevis Island Administration [NIA] hosted a pre-Christmas Concert for seniors 90 years and above last Monday 21 December, at Occasions Entertainment Centre.
Representing the NIA at Monday’s event was Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry. In his address, he reflected on the contributions that seniors had made to the island. He also assured them of his Administration’s plan to continually appreciate them.
“I am so happy that the Ministry [of Social Development] and the Minister Mr. Hensley Daniel have organised a programme for the seniors to make sure that you continue to enjoy life, to make sure that you are seen on TV and to make sure that people are reminded of your great contribution,” Mr. Parry said.
Meantime, Minister of Social Development on Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel highlighted the numerous social programmes in place on the island for the benefit of seniors. He also announced the Ministry’s immediate plan for those in the St. Thomas’ Parish.
“We have a series of programmes to help promote social interaction and to ensure that the older people like yourselves do not live your years in despair but you live the end of your lives sharing and caring with people who are two and three generations from you.
“On the 21st of January 2010 we are going to start a new group of seniors in St. Thomas’ with a launch of the programme in the St. Thomas Parish,” Mr. Daniel said.
The Ministry of Social Development designed a number of programmes in which seniors socialise at Community Centres within their respective parishes weekly.
Also present at the event were Minister of Social Development in the NIA Hon. Hensley Daniel, Social Development Permanent Secretary Alsted Pemberton and Health Advisor in the NIA Mrs. Patricia Hanley.
