The origin of the Hurricane Hugo drink.

Rumor has it that during the horrific storm of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, that this was all that was left in the bar, and thus as the saying go…Needsmust. Nevis was badly hit, and some sections of the island never recovered. For years there were hundreds of palms with no tops…looked just like telephone poles. See this homemade video of the storm…a real piece of history. Still makes me sad.

Hugo’s damage toll in Saint Kitts and Nevis amounted to $46 million, largely sustained by shoreline structures and crops. This equated to 32 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. Homes, government buildings, and trees were damaged by the storm. A fifth of the country was rendered homeless and the entire populace lost power and water. Ninety percent of the residents of Nevis lost their homes. One person was killed after a wall collapsed upon him.
