Women make up more than half of the world’s population, and their contributions to society should not be overlooked. Minister Nisbett emphasized the importance of recognizing and promoting women’s potential, particularly in the field of technology, during the United Nations’ celebration of International Women’s Day 2023 with the theme “DigitALL Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.”

The Gender Affairs Minister pointed out that despite the increasing role of technology in our lives, women continue to be underrepresented in this area, particularly in IT departments, where they are usually in the minority. As a result, the minister suggested that more resources be made available to girls and women, and that women pioneers in this field be recognized and celebrated.

Ms. Nisbett urged everyone to celebrate and encourage the women and girls in their lives and to acknowledge their potential for leadership (#ad). During the award ceremony, the minister recognized five women from Nevis for their contributions to technology, including Dr. Kamara Louisy for Women in Science, Ms. Dianna Browne in the Digital Economy, Ms. Melissa Allen in the Blue Economy, Ms. Kenisha Lewis in the Green Economy, Mrs. Tamicia Lestrade in the Orange Economy, and Mrs. Kimberley Evelyn-Lazarus for Women in Non-Traditional Roles. Mrs. Deslyn Williams-Johnson was also recognized for her work in the Protection and Empowerment of Women and Families with a special award.

In conclusion, Minister Nisbett highlighted the importance of promoting gender equality and recognizing the contributions of women in society. By doing so, we can create a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
