President of the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI) Dr. Laverne Ragster on July 03, 2008, treated past and present students who are also nationals of Nevis to lunch at Banana’s Bistro.

The President, who was in the Federation, opted to mingle with alumni students here and also used that time to update the gathering on changes within the institution.

“We are here to speak with our Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College officials and with your Minister of Education at the Federal level in terms of how we can change the articulation agreement we have with the college to the next level,” Dr. Ragster said.

She said that while it was positive for past and present students to encourage others to attend UVI, it was also important that they advised prospective students well.

On a visit to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands from April 26 to 29th, 2008, Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph W. Parry, who was a guest of the Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. of the United States Virgin Islands, excited a large gathering at the Governor’s Mansion, when he spoke of a united Caribbean and the harmonization of the region’s resources to effectively compete in the global environment.

Premier Parry said that the government and people of Nevis are very excited at the prospect of having geo-thermal energy. He said that the resource utilized the heat below the earth’s surface to produce power and it was of even greater importance in the face of rising oil prices on the world market, hence the urgent need to seek alternative sources of energy.

“We have been told that Nevis has the potential to hold 900 mega watts of power beneath its surface,” said Premier Parry and he added that, “the Government of Nevis has therefore given a license to a company called West Indies Power Limited to explore for this geo-thermal. I am told it is no longer if, but when we can produce power from this geo-thermal energy.

USVI & Saba Interested In Nevis’ Geothermal Scheme

Two high powered delegations from the neighbouring United States Virgin Islands (USVI) and the Dutch Territory of Saba left Nevis today February 29, 2008, following a two day visit for a first hand look at the ongoing geothermal explorations on the island.
 
Both delegations were welcomed to the island by Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry at his Bath Plain Office on Tuesday and were hosted by the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) at a dinner in their honour at the Four Seasons Resorts on Wednesday.
 
Following a drill site visit to the West Indies Power Nevis Ltd Spring Hill site on February 28, 2008, Lieutenant Governor of the United States Virgin Islands Mr. Greg Francis accompanied by his Senior Policy Advisor Mr. Nathan Simmonds and Director of the Virgin Islands Energy Office Mr. Bevan Smith Junior told the Department of Information that he was impressed with the operations and that geothermal energy was something they planned to look into.
