Tourism officials on Nevis launched a new marketing tool to lure visitors to the island. The improved Nevis Tourism Destination Brochure “Nevis Naturally”, was launched recently, with the addition of a five minute video presentation of the destination by the Nevis Tourism Authority (NTA) at its conference room.

The brochure with a new concept, packaging and paper choice will be distributed at the World Travel Market to travel and tour operators around the world and circulated locally.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism Mr. Tyrone O’Flaherty described the brochure as another important tool in the valuable work of the NTA and regarded the new concept as timely. The Authority is charged with the promotion of Nevis.

“In this day and age when so many people are using the internet to make their travel arrangements it is a challenge, really, for the traditional forms of marketing to stay in touch,” he said.

Charlestown, Nevis
September 30, 2008

Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) Mr. Alec Sanguinetti, praised Nevis‘ decision to target high end tourism markets and said it was the right thing to do. He commended Premier and Minister of Tourism Hon. Joseph Parry for the move at his Bath Plain office, when a delegation from the Association visited Nevis on September 29, 2008.

“You are absolutely right in targeting the high end market for your visitor situation because that market, Sir, is the least susceptible to the changes in the market place particularly when we have economic challenges,” he said.

While Mr. Parry thanked the delegation for its visit to Nevis, he described their discussions as “very interesting”. The topics ranged from geothermal, training assistance, the airline situation and how they could work together to market tourism in St. Kitts and Nevis and the Caribbean.

The Premier said he was certain that in spite of the difficulties faced by the industry at this time, the islands of the Caribbean would prevail as they had done in the past and the tourism industry would continue to grow from strength to strength.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture Lloyd Lazar said that there is a definite link between the celebration of Tourism Awareness and Independence.

He explained that Tourism is an important component of the development of the Federation and it is quite appropriate that the activities of the month fall under the banner of the Silver Jubilee Anniversary celebrations.

Upcoming events include the launch of the month on Saturday, September 27 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 10:00 am.

Mr. Lazar noted that the activities that will take place during the month itself, provide an opportunity to demonstrate the partnership that exists between government and the private sector. As such, some of the collaborative events include a Small Hotel Retreat from October 1 to 3, organized by the Hotel and Tourism Association and a Small and Medium Business Enterprise Workshop from October 13 to 16 coordinated by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Collaborations with other government ministries and departments have given rise to a Farmers and Fishers Recognition Ceremony on World Food Day, October 16, that is being organized by the Department of Agriculture as well as the Launch of National Carnival on October 31 being carried out by the National Carnival Committee.

As St. Kitts and Nevis continues to celebrate 25 years as an Independent Nation, the twin-island’s Federation’s Prime Minister says the future will demand “vision and determination, self-awareness and self-mastery, courage, conviction, competence and compassion.”

“Nothing less will do,” declared Prime Minister Douglas as he delivered the Silver Anniversary Independence Message to thousands of nationals including visiting dignitaries attending the traditional Ceremonial Parade at the Football Stadium at Warner Park.

The St. Kitts and Nevis leader pointed out that at this stage of the Federation’s development, “we must now ““ all of us ““ place as much emphasis on developing our intangible assets as we have been on developing our very important, tangible assets ““ our physical infrastructure. We must do so because it is the powerful intangible assets like discipline and determination; initiative and perseverance; fair play and integrity; respect for self, and for others, that determine the fate of a nation. It is these powerful intangibles that determine which societies realize their potential ““ which people truly become masters of their own destiny.”
