The art of basket weaving took on a new concept for Charlestown Primary School Students when they were told that their new skill could be used to enhance the economy of Nevis. The students were enlightened at the closing ceremony of a five-day workshop held at the Craft House at the Pinneys Industrial Site, on April 18, 2008, which was hosted by the Department of Cooperative in Nevis.

Representing the Hon. Robelto Hector who is responsible for Cooperatives in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) was the Department’s Permanent Secretary (PS) Mr. Pearlivan Wilkin, who motivated the students to remain committed to the experiences they had gained from attending the workshop.

He also enlightened them about the importance of making craft. He told them that craft had never been more important than it was now, since it could help to alleviate economic hardships for individuals during difficult times.

He further brought to the student’s attention that craft making had become significant in the society and to possess craft skills would help to generate extra income which would improve the standard of living for those who found a niche in designing crafts.

A renaissance movement has become the buzz on Nevis.  A group of young vibrant Nevisians came together and formed the Helping Our People Excel Organisation (HOPE) Nevis. The Organisation which was established in August of 2006 immediately set out to work in the community to introduce and accomplish their goals and aspirations.

Notably among this, was the Organisation’s decision to adopt the St. Johns Primary School (SJPS) after members of the Organisation made themselves available to give motivational speeches at all of Nevis’ Primary Schools.

The group of young men and women soon became attached to St Johns Primary School students and teaching fraternity, after they gave their initial motivational speech and the guidance counselor suggested that they should adopt the school.

According to one of the Organisation’s representative Ms. Shanelle Simmonds, the idea to adopt St Johns Primary was agreed to after the issue was discussed among the executive body and other members. HOPE Nevis thereafter, continued to impress upon students through additional motivational speeches.

The historical background for SJPS appeared distinct from other schools on Nevis. While other Primary Schools were being renovated or upgraded to brand-new modern educational facilities, the school’s building remained one of the older structures on the island, until recently when students were relocated to an ultra-modern school edifice with a modern library, Science and Computer labs.

A two-day leadership workshop for students organised by the Department of Education in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) held under the theme “Empowering our Youth for Future Leadership”, culminated on April 16, 2008, with a cocktail reception which was held at the Old Manner Hotel in Gingerland.

Through the courtesy of Premier of Nevis and Minister of Education Hon. Joseph Parry, the cocktail was held in honor of both Primary and Secondary School’s Student body Councils. Mr. Parry told the young leaders he had enjoyed the discussion he had with them as one of the workshop’s facilitators.

Premier Parry disclosed that he was pleased the future leaders were motivated to attend the two-day leadership course and more importantly, he hoped they had learnt numerous things that would make a difference in their lives and therefore would encourage them to pursue good leadership through positive reinforcement.

“I hope all of you will continue to be friends and that this group of young people will never forget each other. I want you to form a [human] ring around the island and understand we are one people and if you demonstrate this, you would help to remove the negative things that are taking place in our society,” the Premier said.
