Minister with responsibility for Social Transformation on Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel told senior citizens from across the island on October 01, that while the international community celebrated them the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) lead the way in their care and wellbeing.

The Minister was at the time delivering an address at a celebratory luncheon and exhibition at the Occasions Center, Pinneys, organised by the Department of Social Development, Senior Citizens Division, to mark the start of a month long celebration on Nevis.

Mr. Daniel pointed to a number of areas to support his claim and cited that under his stewardship; a fully functional Senior Citizens Division was established within the Department; a team of Home Help Care Workers who cared for those who were unable to assist themselves were all established.

He further explained that outreach programmes for senior citizens at the Butlers Community Centre and Flats Mandela Centre had been instituted with similar plans for other parishes on the drawing board.

A call for the residents of Challengers and Stonefort to utilise the new Multi-Purpose Centre to shape the lives of the youth in a positive direction and provide services for the senior citizens.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said the new EC$1.2 million building financed by the Government of the Republic of China on Taiwan “symbolise the birth of a new set of opportunities that can be fashioned by the creativity of the people in the communities.”

The two-story structure houses a Day Care and Pre-School facilities on the ground floor and a community centre on the top floor.

“It is a facility that provides daycare services to be used by your families – that is the children who will use the nursery and the preschool as provided by the Department of Education and also for our young people and our adults including the elderly, who will use this multipurpose centre firstly, as a community centre with its several services that it will provide and secondly, as an emergency centre especially to be used in the time of hurricanes,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who paid tribute to former Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency Mr. John Liu and his successor His Excellency Rong Chuan Wu.

The Minister with responsibility for Social Transformation on Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel in a recent announcement, disclosed that the Department of Social Services had cut spending as a result of greater efficiency and effectiveness. This he attributed to restructuring over the last year which had had also brought about increased collaboration and corporation.
 
Mr. Daniel explained at a sitting of the Nevis Island Assembly on April 15, 2008, that the Department had moved from a situation in May of 1998 in the words of a local newspaper “the community of Nevis leads in community development” to a significant reduction in the number of programmes by 2006.
 
The Administration’s task, he said therefore, was to restructure the Department and reintroduce the programmes.
 
There are now four Units in the Department of Social Services, a Youth Division, The Gender relations Unit and the Senior Citizens Division.
