Nevis Easter Camp Participants Learn Safety Lessons

Over 100 primary school age students on Nevis were admonished to take heed to the lessons which encompassed the value of safety that they would receive and to utilise them to enhance their lives and that of those around them.
 
The advice came from Minister of Youth and Social Transformation in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Hensley Daniel on April 14, 2008, at the start of the annual week long Easter Camp organised by the Ministry of Social Affairs at the St. Thomas Primary School. The theme for the activity is “Nurturing strong minds in a safe environment; safety first”.
 
“At the moment the society is changing where people are tending towards violence, crime and fighting and I want you as participants in this programme with a focus on safety first to be able to make that difference. Nobody who comes to this Easter Camp must be involved in a fight in school nobody who comes to Camp must be in a gang. We want you to be good examples and “¦share with all of your friends and all of the other students”¦
 
“As you go through the week bear in mind that all the people who have come to make presentations they have come because they have your interest at heart. They have come because they want to help promote the orderly development of young people and I want you to think very seriously as they say to you they want you, there are over 100 of you to be good examples for the others who were not able to attend,” he said.

St. Kitts – Nevis Removes Tax On Some Food Items

Consumers in St. Kitts and Nevis will now be paying less for 10 items ranging from canned foods to corn flakes and pampers.

The St. Kitts – Nevis Government on Monday ordered the removal of consumption tax to reduce the cost of living on several food items and pampers.

Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty said Cabinet removed the consumption tax on chicken, cheese, pasta, canned corn beef, Raisin bran corn flakes, sardines, soyabean oil, tinned tuna, Vienna sausage, margarine, tomato ketchup and diapers for babies and adults.

“The consumption tax usually applied to these products ranges from 15% to 22.5%, hence the removal of the consumption tax will yield significant savings for consumers. Some of these items will also very shortly be subjected to a further reduction in price through the removal of another tax called the CET or the Common External Tariff,” said Minister Carty.

Caribbean Leaders To Combat Rising Regional Crime

Caribbean leaders have agreed on a number of measures to combat rising crime in the region.

St. Kits and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and other Caribbean leaders during the 13th Special Meeting in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, on 4-5 April 2008 ventilated the crime and security issues facing the Region and to agreed on a Strategy and Plan of Action to stem the rising tide of violent criminality.

Heads of Government received proposals from the Extra-ordinary Joint Meeting of the Standing Committees of Commissioners of Police and of Military Chiefs; the Security Policy and Advisory Committee (SEPAC); and the Council of Ministers with Responsibility for National Security and Laws Enforcement (CONSLE).

It was agreed that, building on the legacy of the success of the Security Co-operation arrangements put in place for the Cricket World Cup 2007, some of the elements would be upgraded and expanded on a permanent basis.

Local Stakeholders Excited About Female Condom

Stakeholders in St. Kitts – Nevis are excited by the strategy of the National AIDS Secretariat to promote usage of the FC2 female condom.

Earlier this week, a workshop at the Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI) provided participants with information about the female condom and how it will help to reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies.

SKNIS spoke to some of the participants to get their thoughts on the workshop and the female condom. Vercelette Wilson explained that she enjoyed the session. “It was very informative and now we know that women have a choice,” she stated, adding that the increased sturdiness of the condom is a source of comfort as it is not easily broken.

Australia Name Cricket Teams For West Indies Tour

Australia have named a revamped Test squad and a 14-man team for the five one-day internationals during the upcoming tour of the West Indies, which includes two One-Day International games at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium.

The Australians have recalled batsman Simon Katich and including two spin bowlers.

Veteran leg spinner Stuart MacGill and left-arm spinner Beau Casson are among 15 players selected in the squad for the three-Test series, while Michael Clarke was named vice-captain after the retirement of Adam Gilchrist.

The 14-man squad for the five one-day internationals against the West Indies includes batsman Michael Hussey’s younger brother David for the first time.

According to the Times On-Line, Andrew Hilditch, chair of national selectors, said 26-year-old Clarke would be vice-captain to Ricky Ponting for both squads after he demonstrated his leadership credentials during the summer.

Clarke, who recently rejected the opportunity to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League to spend more time with his ill father, captained the Australian Twenty20 side to victory over India in February.
