St. Kitts – Nevis Citizens Can Confirm Voter Registration

Members of the electorate that live overseas will be able to confirm their registration at St. Kitts and Nevis‘ Embassies and Consulates.

This announcement was made on Tuesday by Minister of State for Information Honourable Nigel Carty during an interview with SKNIS. The news of the confirmation process for qualifying overseas-based voters comes one week after Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas reiterated his promise to protect the franchise of citizens resident abroad.

“We will be looking at the important population districts in North America, the United Kingdom and the United States Virgin Islands to facilitate the confirmation of our nationals who are located in those areas,” said Minister Carty.

Over 200 Homes In St. Kitts – Nevis To Be Improved

Over 200 of the NEMA Starter Homes constructed following Hurricane Georges in 1998 will be expanded under the NEMA Housing Improvement Project, financed by the Government of Venezuela.

Minister of Housing, Hon. Cedric Liburd said 458 houses were constructed of which 302 were allocated free to occupants and 146 were sold.

The one-room homes were built to provide shelter for persons whose homes were destroyed or severely damaged as a result of Hurricane Georges.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark the completion of the first home under the NEMA Housing Improvement Project, Minister Liburd said of the 458 homes allocated 223 persons requested  assistance to expand their houses and several owners have already sign the necessary agreement with the National Housing Corporation (NHC).

St. Kitts – Nevis To Host Petro Caribe Summit

St. Kitts and Nevis has been invited to host the Fifth Petro Caribe Summit in June this year.

This is according to Minister of Public Utilities, Transport and Posts Honourable Earl Asim Martin, who was addressing the media during his first press conference for 2008.

He elaborated that there have already been two Petro Caribe Summits in Venezuela, one in Jamaica and one in Cuba.  The Minister further noted that in his experience the summits are elaborate affairs with heads of government attend with large delegations.  He speculated that His Excellency Hugo Chavez should be among the Presidents in attendance.  It was revealed that the first committee meeting to plan the event will be held January 23, 2008.
