Nevis Agriculture Is Rated Tops In Region

Director of Agriculture in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Mr. Kelvin Daly revealed that under the new Administration the Department had improved agriculture on Nevis, which has made the island the envy of other countries in the region.
 
Mr. Daly made the revelation at the Villa in Charlestown at the opening Ceremony for the 14th annual Agricultural Open Day on Thursday, April 24, 2008, under the Theme: “Micro Farming: The Driving Force for Agriculture Past, Present and Future,”
 
“Many islands in the region have called for advice from Nevis because they recognise what we are doing is significant. In the next two weeks we would be having a group from Anguilla who are concerned about returning to farming
 
“It’s amazing how much resource was put into other areas and agriculture was left on the doorstep but the times are changing and what we’re saying all along is proving to be true you can’t turn your back on agriculture. We in Nevis are positioned to leap forward ahead of the region despite criticisms that we are not doing enough in agriculture,” Director Daly said
 
Dr. Daly expounded on the importance of micro farming which he said was more than planting plants in the backyard. He said the Department had on display an extension of varied micro farming methods.

The St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly bade farewell to its Speaker the Hon. Marcella Liburd and shortly after, unanimously elected the Hon. Curtis Martin as her successor.

Liburd served as a senator in the First Denzil Douglas Labour Party Administration from 1995 until she resigned in early 2000 to make way for incoming Senator the Hon. Jacinth Henry-Martin, who went on to serve as Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports from 2000 to 2004.

Liburd, who was elected Speaker following the 2004 General Elections, was the Federation’s Second Female Speaker of the law making body. The first was the Hon. Ada May Edwards, who also served in the House of Assembly, during the Labour Party Administration of the Right Excellent Sir Robert L. Bradshaw.

Ms. Liburd, a lawyer, former educator and sports enthusiast, is the fourth female to be a member of the National Assembly in St. Kitts and Nevis. The others were Mrs. Jean Byron-Condor, Miss Constance Mitcham, Mrs. Anne Wigley and Mrs. Jacinth Henry-Martin.

Nevis Children Celebrate Earth Day 2008

Earth Day in Nevis was officially observed on Tuesday April 22, 2008, with a march dubbed “Litter Stomp”. The activity showcased encouraging signs and slogans that the Nevisian society embarked on in a collaborative effort with the Solid Waste Management Authority to keep Nevis clean and beautiful.
 
With musical accompaniment by Nevis’ local “Iron Band”, the litter stomp which culminated at the Gazebo in the vicinity of Old Hospital Road in Charlestown saw participants made a prior visible entrance into Charlestown holding placards which depicted Solid Waste Management Authority awareness messages against littering.
 
On hand was Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Hensley Daniel, who spoke to participants. He said the observance of Earth Day was more than just a walk and the actions of the community should be a daily occurrence.
 
He spoke of the destructive habits of society that were harmful to the sustainability of the environment. He also spoke of precautionary measures that must be applied by the people of Nevis to address their consumption patterns.

Ian Richards and Jihan Williams are currently in Barbados, working on new strategies to boost the effectiveness of the CARICOM Youth Ambassador Programme (CYAP) for the period 2008 to 2011.

The regional youth advocates, who are mandated to promote CARICOM issues on the national level, are meeting for an April 21 to 23 workshop at the United Nations House in Christ Church, Barbados. An opening ceremony was held on Monday to welcome the new and returning Ambassadors who were presented their instruments of appointment by the Permanent Secretary of Youth (Barbados) Lionel Weekes.

Deputy Programme Manager for Youth Development at the CARICOM Secretariat, Dr. Heather Johnson applauded the 26 members at the meeting, among whom 15 are new, for their commendable volunteerism and dedication to the CYA programme (CYAP). She told the CYAs that they are important tools in the effort to educate young people on the national level and encouraged them to network with their peers and related associations such as national youth councils to ensure a wide range of youth are positively impacted by the programme.  Dr. Johnson thanked the Government of Barbados for hosting the three-day workshop, which is the first for the year.

Nevis Premier Holds Talks With Chief Minister Of Anguilla

Premier of Nevis, the Hon Joseph Parry met with the Chief Minister of Anguilla, the Hon. Osborne Flemming to discuss matters relating to Tourism, the Economy and Immigration.

Premier Parry was accompanied by Deputy Premier-Hon. Hensley Daniel and Legal Adviser, the Hon. Patrice Nisbett, who initially attended a luncheon hosted by the Chief Minister at the Tenemos Resort Restaurant Zurra on Sunday, April 20th.

On Monday morning the talks continued when the entire Anguilla Island Administration Cabinet met with members of the Nevis Island Administration.  This time the discussion was based on the development of Anguilla and Nevis,Tourism and the progress the islands have made over the years.  The Chief Minister was very interested in the geothermal project and placed on record his excitement over the idea of seeing electricity being offered at a considerably less expensive rate.

The Chief Minister was also proud to inform the team that Anguillians have been investing large sums of money in their own country.  As a matter of fact, when they took an island tour, he showed off an area of about 300 acres of land which, he said, is being developed by Anguillians to the tune of one hundred million dollars.
