Richards Assumes New Post In Ambassador Programme

Ian Richards of St. Kitts and Nevis has been elected to the Management Team of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Youth Ambassador Programme (CYAP).

Richards, who is an Assistant Information Officer at the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service, was elected by his colleague CYAs with a two thirds majority vote to the post of Vice Dean of Public Relations and Communication. The vote was held last week in Barbados at the finale of an Induction and Orientation Workshop for the regional youth advocates, and marks the first time a national of the twin island Federation will serve on the Management Team.

“It was an honour to have been given this vote of confidence by my peers,” said the second year CYA. “The work of the CYAP is very important and we owe it to the young people that we represent at these meetings, to use every avenue available to highlight key issues affecting youth. The media is an important partner in this regard,” he stressed.

Environmental concerns and food security are two new issues which the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Youth Ambassadors (CYAs) have identified as growing risks to the Regional youth population, and plan to play a more active role in these areas.

The new focus areas were selected during the April 21 to 23 meeting in Barbados. In support of the interest expressed in climate change, a briefing was delivered on the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme which tackles a number of environmental challenges. Food security strategies will be reviewed later. CYAs will also continue their efforts in HIV/AIDS and CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME)-related fields.

The Dean of the CYA programme described the meeting as “successful.”

“I am pleased with the high level of participation we had as well as the caliber of knowledge and dedicated individuals who have been appointed as representatives of the youth in the Region,” Donna Greene of Barbados said. “Everyone made worthwhile contributions and they need to be commended and congratulated.”

Yachts Moored Off Nevis Island’s Coastline

General Manager of the Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority (NASPA) Mr. Spencer Hanley said the Authority had begun to reap benefits from the installation of 100 screw anchor type moorings, that were installed along the western coast from Oualie Beach to Gallows Bay in September 2007.

In an interview with the Department of Information on Friday April 25, 2008, Mr. Hanley said the Authority had seen a marked increase in the number of yachts to the island’s shores after three months of installation.

“When we compare the period of January to May of 2007, we had 214 yacht calls to Nevis. When we compare the period January through March, just three months of 2007 we have 334 yacht calls. So right away you have seen the difference right there”¦

“We installed 100 moorings of the screw anchor type and the completion of the installation was in September last year and yes we want to say that it has been a success up until this point,” he said.

According to the Authority’s General Manager, the idea behind the installation of the moorings was to attract yachts to Nevis and to provide protection to the marine environment, since the island did not have the facility of a marina. He explained that when ships dropped anchor they ploughed the sea bed and damaged the coral and habitat and therefore wanted to do some damage control.

“We have to look at the cost of food and the rising cost of living in general. The government has taken steps by reducing land prices and we are also taking steps in reducing duty on a number of items; but we must grow more food and find more ways and means to reduce the cost of living,” said Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry.

Premier Parry made the address at the Fourteenth Annual Open Day Agricultural Fair at the Villa Grounds of the Charlestown Secondary School. He did the honours on behalf of Minister of Agriculture, Hon Robelto Hector, who was in Japan attending to government business.

Local and Taiwanese fruits and vegetables, Caribbean Cuisine and livestock will be on display on Friday, April 25th following Thursday’s formal opening. This year’s theme is “Micro Farming: The Driving force for Agriculture: Past, Present and Future.”

The Patron this year is 95 year old Mr. George Sutton of Butlers Village, who, in his heyday, worked as an Agricultural Officer/ Supervisor at Eden Browne, Maddens, New River, Potworks and a number of other estates around the island.
