A 13-year-old student at the Basseterre High School, who represented Constituency #1 during the Miss Labour Queen Pageant, walked away with the coveted title from a field of eight contestants on Saturday night.

Rae-Dawn Thomas, who gave a powerful message in her performing talent, gaining 172 of a possible 180 points in that segment, amassed an overall total of 511.5 points.

National Political Leader of the governing St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Party and Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas robed the winner and her Parliamentary Representative for East Basseterre, Dr. the Hon. Earl Asim Martin, placed the crown before a massive crowd at Carnival Village.

First runner-up with 464.5 points was Vashni Belle of Constituency #7 (Ottley’s to Belle Vue). Tamara Francis of Constituency # 2 (Central Basseterre) was Second Runner-Up with 391.5 points and the Third Runner up position went to Ashley Browne of Constituency # 5 (Fig Tree/Sandy Point). She received 383 points.

On a visit to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands from April 26 to 29th, 2008, Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph W. Parry, who was a guest of the Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. of the United States Virgin Islands, excited a large gathering at the Governor’s Mansion, when he spoke of a united Caribbean and the harmonization of the region’s resources to effectively compete in the global environment.

Premier Parry said that the government and people of Nevis are very excited at the prospect of having geo-thermal energy. He said that the resource utilized the heat below the earth’s surface to produce power and it was of even greater importance in the face of rising oil prices on the world market, hence the urgent need to seek alternative sources of energy.

“We have been told that Nevis has the potential to hold 900 mega watts of power beneath its surface,” said Premier Parry and he added that, “the Government of Nevis has therefore given a license to a company called West Indies Power Limited to explore for this geo-thermal. I am told it is no longer if, but when we can produce power from this geo-thermal energy.

Youth Month in Nevis culminated Wednesday April 25, 2008 with a grand finale rally that climaxed at the Nevis Cultural Center. The event was organised in collaboration with the newly launched Peer Unit of the Youth Division and included entertainment from various youth groups and individuals.
 
On hand at the event was Minister responsible for Youth and Social Development in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Hensley Daniel, who urged the youths of Nevis to abstain from promiscuous and anti-social behaviour, read avidly, make informed healthy choices and to set good examples for other youths, who did not experience the impact of the rally.
 
Mr. Daniel said the young people of Nevis represented the island’s greatest hope, opportunities and greatest challenges. The government he said was focused on the positive to help them stay on course.
 
“In the Nevis Island Administration we do not overlook the energy of the young people. We encouraged responsibility of self and we actually are excited about the agitation and the demands of the young people.
 
“With regards to the inclusion of the decision making process, we do not share the view that young people are the men and women of tomorrow but we say they are the men and women of today. Since we came to government in 2006, there is a young person on the Board of every Public Corporation in Nevis and that young person is given the same responsibility and the same amount of authority as the Board’s older adults,” Mr. Daniel said.

Commonwealth Youth Ambassador Alternate for St Kitts – Nevis Mr. Anselm Caines decried the stereotyping of young people which he said denied them of their individuality and prevented them from reaching their full potential. Mr. Caines made the statement while he delivered the feature address at the closing ceremony to mark the end of youth month 2008 at a recent rally.
 
“We have to dump the stereotyping of young people which denies them their individuality and prevents us from seeing their potential for greater things. Moreover, there are times that we have to be prepared to accept that our experience however great, it is does not necessarily make us qualified or determined their course of development. So often I hear the older adults speak about how it was in their time and how this young generation is going,” Mr. Caines said.
 
Mr. Caines at the time represented youths on Nevis and spoke on the topic of Youth Development to government and non government leaders of Nevis. He called on them to recognise the fundamental flaws in matters related to youths.
 
He said the many problems surrounding youths were debated as a youth problem, which implied something was fundamentally wrong with young people. He admitted that while there were exceptions, the energy and enthusiasm of young people were misinterpreted.
 
He further added that the youths of this era continued to experience rapid changes unlike previous generations which had contributed to the difficulties young people have encountered.
