Thousands of nationals, residents and foreign dignitaries attended last Friday’s Ceremonial Parade to mark the 25th Anniversary of Independence at the Warner Park Football Stadium.

Among the dignitaries were a Presidential Delegation from the Republic of China on Taiwan, headed by Chief Justice His Excellency Dr. In-Jaw Lai; United States Ambassador, Her Excellency, Mary M. Ourisman; France’s Ambassador, Her Excellency Michele Sauteraud; Russia’s Ambassador, His Excellency Victor Zotin and Mrs. Zotin; Canadian High Commissioner, His Excellency David Marshall and Mrs. Marshall; Asssiant Secretary General of the Organsiation of American States, His Excellency Albert Ramdin, British High Commissioner His Excellency Duncan Taylor and Mexico’s Ambassador, His Excellency Alonzo Losano Arrendondo as well as the Resident Ambassadors of Cuba, Venezuela, the Republic of China on Taiwan and the Honorary Consuls of Turkey, Austria, Italy, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica.

Units of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force and the Cadet Corps along with the Boys Brigade, Seventh Day Adventist Pathfinders, the Majorettes, Boy Scouts, Boys Brigade, Fire Services, Girls Brigade, the Shadwell Overcomers and the Traffic Wardens were on parade.

Former United States Congress Woman Dr. the Hon. Una Clarke, welcomed the new the Drag Racing facility on Nevis and cited it would become a worldwide tourist attraction and create jobs. She made the comment at the inaugural races on September 22, 2008, when she spoke with the Department of Information.

Mrs. Clarke who was on the island as a guest of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) for the Federation’s 25th anniversary of Independence celebrations, said she would not have missed the opportunity to experience the races first hand.

“This attraction will bring people from all over the world who are interested in drag race or any other kind of race. It’s a tourist attraction and it will over the years create jobs, bring new visitors and that is what we want to do is to be able to be a showpiece,” she said.

Mrs. Clarke described the race track as a beautiful one which would grow from strength to strength. She also congratulated those with the vision to make the track a reality.

As St. Kitts and Nevis continues to celebrate 25 years as an Independent Nation, the twin-island’s Federation’s Prime Minister says the future will demand “vision and determination, self-awareness and self-mastery, courage, conviction, competence and compassion.”

“Nothing less will do,” declared Prime Minister Douglas as he delivered the Silver Anniversary Independence Message to thousands of nationals including visiting dignitaries attending the traditional Ceremonial Parade at the Football Stadium at Warner Park.

The St. Kitts and Nevis leader pointed out that at this stage of the Federation’s development, “we must now ““ all of us ““ place as much emphasis on developing our intangible assets as we have been on developing our very important, tangible assets ““ our physical infrastructure. We must do so because it is the powerful intangible assets like discipline and determination; initiative and perseverance; fair play and integrity; respect for self, and for others, that determine the fate of a nation. It is these powerful intangibles that determine which societies realize their potential ““ which people truly become masters of their own destiny.”

The Queen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Presidents of the Republics of France and Guyana and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom have sent congratulatory messages on the occasion of St. Kitts and Nevis‘ 25th Anniversary of Independence on September 19th .

Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands (Holland) in a message to Governor General His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian said the celebration gives her the opportunity to extend congratulations and best wishes for a prosperous future for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

French President, His Excellency Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy in his
congratulatory message to Sir Cuthbert reiterated the strengthening of the relations which bring France and St. Kitts and Nevis together and to the development of cooperation including the framework of the regional organisations such as the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), CARICOM, CARIFDORUM and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).

United States Secretary of State, the Hon. Condoleeza Rice has congratulated St. Kitts and Nevis on its 25th Anniversary of political independence.

America’s top ranking Bush Administration Cabinet official said the United States “as a neighbour and friend applauds the achievements over the past quarter century.”

“Since achieving independence, St. Kitts and Nevis has been one of an ever growing number of countries in the Western Hemisphere that enjoy the freedoms and opportunities afforded by a democratic government,” said Rice in the 25th Anniversary Commemorative booklet published by the Embassy of St. Kitts and Nevis in Washington, D.C.

Secretary of State Rice said St. Kitts and Nevis sets an example of how people can harness their national resources to build a secure and prosperous future.
