Nevis Family Receives New Home After Fire

September 08, 2008

The Nevis Island Administration (NIA) moved quickly on September 05. 2008, to house a Brown Hill family made homeless by an early morning fire that gutted their home and all their possessions earlier that day.

Minister responsible for Social Transformation and Deputy Premier Hon. Hensley Daniel, accompanied by Area Representative Hon. Robelto Hector and Director of the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation (NHLDC) Mr. Eustace Nisbett Jr., handed over the keys to a three bedroom house to Mr. William Ize-Iyamu, Ms. Diane William and their four children at the Harbour View Development Project at Ramsbury. Hr. Daniel said the speedy intervention was a demonstration that the NIA cared about the ordinary people of Nevis.

“I think the whole of Nevis must understand that this is where we reach down to the ordinary people of the communit, to ensure that their immediate needs are met. I believe Diane and William can sleep a little more comfortable with their four children knowing that we have been able to provide them with housing in a very short space of time within 24 hours.

“It is not always possible that we have a housing project where we have vacant homes but certainly we want to point out it is a strategic intervention on our part, so that we can get the family to pick up itself and move on”¦I would like to present you the keys to this house as an indication of our[the Ministry of Social Development, Minister Robelto Hector and NHLDC]  sincere gratitude to them and also a demonstration of our [NIA’s] willingness to ensure that you and your family are properly housed in this disaster. This is our real way of demonstrating we care and that we have come to serve the people and serve them expeditiously,” he said.

Nevis Premier Speaks About Iceland Trip

Premier of Nevis - Joseph Parry

Premier of Nevis – Joseph Parry

Charlestown, Nevis
August 15, 2008

Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry cleared the air on his upcoming two day visit to Iceland and cited it would be for positive reasons related to geothermal energy unlike the Opposition’s charge that it was for prior lack of research on the matter.

Mr. Parry told the Department of Information on August 14, 2008, on the heels of a National Consultation on the Economy which was hosted by Prime Minister Hon. Denzil Douglas at the Marriott Hotel in St. Kitts earlier that day, that he explained to the forum why he found it important to accept an invitation to visit with the government of Iceland.

“I specifically indicated why I was going to Iceland, I thought that was very important because I didn’t want anybody to be mistaken why I was going to Iceland and there are two reasons why I am going. The first reason is to get their government’s support to build our negotiation team for the power purchase agreement and the second reason was to see the economic impact that geothermal has had on Iceland, so that we can get a feel of what it can do in terms of Nevis for the next few years.

“I am not going to Iceland because we have a problem or we did not do proper research at the beginning. I am going to Iceland for positive reasons and I want the public to be quite clear on that and let me finally say  as far as this is concerned I like to define myself, I think I can speak very well I don’t need the Opposition [Concerned Citizens Movement] to define me. They seem better defining me than doing the work they should have done in the last 14 years,” he said.

Nevis Culture Advisor Tells Public…Support The Youth

Husani Paris - 2008 Senior Kaiso Champion

Husani Paris  – 2008 Senior Kaiso Champion With Mom

Charlestown, Nevis
August 14, 2008

Chairman of Culturama 2008  and Advisor on Culture in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Mr. Halsted “Sooty” Byron, issued a call to the public to support the youth in particular when they indulged in all things positive, rather than seek stall their progress.

During an interview with the Department of Information on August 14, 2008, Mr. Byron made reference to Nevis youngest ever Senior Kaiso Monarch De Inspirer (Master Husani Paris), who for some members of the public, had echoed sentiments that the 14 year old was too young to compete with the adult contenders.

“It is important for us to give full support to the youths, especially when they are involved in things positive. Ever so often, in every sphere of life, a young person would come through and outperform others in sports, the arts, culture in everything.

“Especially in these times where there are so many negatives associated with our young people, we need to give the encouragement to those who are involved in positive thing. Do not hold back the youths we need the youths to participate,” he said.

Meantime, Husani’s mother Ms. Julitta Paris, echoed similar sentiments when she spoke to the Department of Information on August 13, 2008, after her return to Nevis. She had accompanied her son to Anguilla, where he carried out his first tour of duty last weekend to represent the island at a Leeward Islands calypso contest.
