Cuba’s new President His Excellency Raul Castro-Ruiz has been told that the choice by the National Assembly for him to succeed his brother, His Excellency Fidel Castro, registers the trust which his “country’s top level of government deposits in you ““ a choice which from all accounts resounds well with the people.”

“This confidence is undoubtedly rooted in your decades-long display and demonstration of stalwart management which delivered the Cuban economy from its demise during the 1990’s. Your loyalty and support you rendered to your brother and predecessor Comrade Fidel bear stark evidence of the strength of your character. This moral fiber is always admirable in an individual and even moreso in a leader,” said Prime Minister Douglas in a letter congratulating the new Cuban leader.

St. Kitts – Nevis To Benefit From BNTF Programme

Communities in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis are expected to see more benefits from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)-financed Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF).

The Federal Cabinet, meeting on Monday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, reviewed the management framework of the BNTF, whose objective is to meet basic community needs such as road improvement and educational infrastructure development among other areas.

Cabinet, after careful analysis of the efficiency of the programme made the changes which are geared towards improving the success as well as timeliness in the implementation of BNTF projects.

St. Kitts – Nevis Government To Address Healthcare

The St. Kitts and Nevis Cabinet on Monday approved a new National Strategic Health Plan, designed to address the major healthcare challenges facing the twin-island Federation.

The five-year plan, presented by Minister of Health, Hon. Rupert Herbert, sets out strategies to achieve a healthier and more production nation and was developed through support from the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO).

It has adopted a multi-sectoral approach involving government, the private sector, and civil society and is based on seven critical pillars.

The Development of the Health Systems will focus on sustainable financing mechanisms, diagnostic capacity and continuous quality improvement, while the Family Health  segment will pay increased attention to immunization, men’s health, and senior citizens’ health.
