Cuba’s new President His Excellency Raul Castro-Ruiz has been told that the choice by the National Assembly for him to succeed his brother, His Excellency Fidel Castro, registers the trust which his “country’s top level of government deposits in you ““ a choice which from all accounts resounds well with the people.”

“This confidence is undoubtedly rooted in your decades-long display and demonstration of stalwart management which delivered the Cuban economy from its demise during the 1990’s. Your loyalty and support you rendered to your brother and predecessor Comrade Fidel bear stark evidence of the strength of your character. This moral fiber is always admirable in an individual and even moreso in a leader,” said Prime Minister Douglas in a letter congratulating the new Cuban leader.

Prime Minister Douglas noted that St. Kitts and Nevis and Cuba share a rich heritage. “Our peoples are intricately linked by blood and history. As the years have progressed the strong roots of our common past have grown to buttress the relations we have long enjoyed to our mutual advantage,” said Dr. Douglas.

The St. Kitts and Nevis leader told President Raul Castro that he looks forward to the future. “There I find comfort in the steadfast conviction that the good work Comrade Fidel, your beloved brother began in embracing his neighbours, spreading generosity in the spirit of fraternity will enabled by your competent hands, to posterity extend.”

“Your people trust you to fulfill a mandate and the rest of the world depends upon you to do so. You can count on my firm support in this endeavour,” said Prime Minister Douglas in his message to Raul Castro.

During his last visit the Havana last year, Prime Minister Douglas met and held discussions with the younger Castro, who was Acting President at the time.
