The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has issued a number of tips to help the public stay safe and better protect their property during the Christmas and Carnival season.

The Force’s website www.sknpolice.com advises persons on shopping trips to avoid wearing expensive jewelry and carrying large amounts of cash. It suggests that shoppers use credit cards or checks to pay for their purchases. Shoppers are also advised to stay alert to their surroundings and avoid overloading themselves with packages.

Safety tips while driving, notes that persons should not drive alone, especially at night or leave vehicles unoccupied while the motor is running. Parking should be done in well lit areas and packages should not be left unattended on car seats. Additionally, persons should not approach their car alone if suspicious persons are hanging around the area.

Locals typically buy or receive “big ticket items” during the season such as electronic gadgets, tablets, laptops, smart phones, LCD televisions, video game consoles etc. The boxes that these products arrive in are often placed in front of homes for garbage collection.

“In doing so you are inviting criminals to come and shop for their Christmas presents at your house,” Commissioner Walwyn stated.

He suggested that persons leave a radio or television playing while out of the house or leaving on exterior lights during nighttime.
