Shaws Road Housing Project Under Construction
Charlestown, Nevis
July 17, 2008
Officials of the Nevis Land and Housing Corporation (NLHC) visited the Shaws Road Housing Development Project on Thursday July 17, 2008, for a first hand view of the work there. The project formed part of a wider Bigger and Better Homes Project for all Nevisians which was launched by the Corporation in 2007.
General Manager of the NLHC Mr. Eustace Nisbett, said during his progress report that the project was on schedule and expected to be completed in August.
“The Shaws Road Housing Development commenced in early June 2008 and work here is progressing smoothly. We commenced the construction of 11 structures. Previously there were eight completed structures and we are expecting that this project would be completed within the second week of August,” he said.
According to Mr. Nisbett, not only would 11 home owners soon have their own homes but the project had provided gainful employment for seven local contractors and a 28 – man crew.
Also on the visit was Minister with responsibility for Lands and Housing in the Nevis Island Administration Hon. Robelto Hector, who too voiced his satisfaction with the work status and gave the project his stamp of approval.
“The last time I was here, there were only seven homes and four starting foundations. I am happy to see that we have almost 18 homes in this area, the majority of which are near completion.
“I am so pleased with the work of the Corporation and the contractors in this area and I must not take all the credit for the work done in this area. I must particularly say that Mr. [Patrice] Nisbett has been a driving force in ensuring that this project comes to fruition,” Mr. Hector said.
Area Representative in the Federal Assembly and Legal Advisor in the Nevis Island Administration Hon. Patrice Nisbett, a driving force behind the project, said it was out of overwhelming need for housing in the constituency, that the houses were being made available to the people of the area.
“As the people would be aware, we have continued the housing programme in the St. James area in order to satisfy the housing need. At the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation we have requests specifically from the St. James area from over 300 people and quite naturally, in order to satisfy that housing need, it would mean that we would have to continue to build homes in the St. James Area,” he said.
He said the Corporation was at the stage of house allocation to the applicants which was a transparent process but explained that if one did not receive a house the continuation of the housing programme at Maddens area shortly would satisfy the necessary housing demands,” he said.
Mr. Nisbett also noted that persons engaged in the project were predominantly harnessed from the St. James Parish.
