Nevis Island Govt. Visit To St.Maarten & Anguilla

Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry, led a delegation to St. Maarten on Saturday, April 19th and Anguilla on Sunday, April 20th   2008.  The Hon. Joseph Parry reported to Nevisian Nationals on the accomplishments of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) led Nevis Island Administration (NIA).

Premier Parry was accompanied by Deputy Premier- Hon. Hensley Daniel, Junior Minister ““ Hon. Dwight Cozier and Legal Adviser to the NIA- Hon. Patrice Nisbett.

“We went into government with the idea of improving the lives of Nevisians. Our Slogan was “People First” and our manifesto was entitled “The People’s Agenda.  We have not reneged on that promise.”  Since we have been in government, we have focused on a number of issues like Education and training for young people. We have provided free textbooks to students in government schools, free lunches for those who qualify and free or assisted tuition for college /university level education,” articulated Premier Parry.

The Premier’s report was assisted by a meticulous and well organised power point presentation that contained text and pictures of the undertakings and progress of the NRP led NIA over the past 21 months.

Basketry Works By Charlestown Primary Students

The art of basket weaving took on a new concept for Charlestown Primary School Students when they were told that their new skill could be used to enhance the economy of Nevis. The students were enlightened at the closing ceremony of a five-day workshop held at the Craft House at the Pinneys Industrial Site, on April 18, 2008, which was hosted by the Department of Cooperative in Nevis.
 
Representing the Hon. Robelto Hector who is responsible for Cooperatives in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) was the Department’s Permanent Secretary (PS) Mr. Pearlivan Wilkin, who motivated the students to remain committed to the experiences they had gained from attending the workshop.
 
He also enlightened them about the importance of making craft. He told them that craft had never been more important than it was now, since it could help to alleviate economic hardships for individuals during difficult times.
 
He further brought to the student’s attention that craft making had become significant in the society and to possess craft skills would help to generate extra income which would improve the standard of living for those who found a niche in designing crafts.

The consumption tax on a selected list of food and non-food items approved by the Cabinet last month, will be removed with effect from the first of next month, Minister of State with responsibility for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty disclosed on Tuesday.

Minister Carty also disclosed that price control officers have been employed to ensure that the price on these food and non-food items go down so that the consumers benefit.

“Cabinet mandated that effective May 1, 2008, the consumption tax be removed from the following list: Chicken, processed cheese, pasta, corned beef, sardines, tinned tuna, vienna sausage, margarine, ketchup, diapers (for babies and adults), and baby formula. The consumption tax on these items ranges from 15 percent to 22.5 percent,’ said Sen. Carty following Monday’s Cabinet Meeting.
