Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
September 17, 2009
In its quest to improve the capacity of its human resource, and to ensure that its court prosecutors are equipped with the necessary skills to meet the challenges of the court room, two Police Officers recently returned from the Regional Police Training School in Barbados, where they underwent four weeks of intense training as court prosecutors. Sgt Conrad Bertie of the Nevis Division and Cpl. John Bergan of the St. Christopher Division were the beneficiaries of this training course, which had participants from other Police Forces across the OECS and Barbados.
The course, which ran from August 10th to September 4th, had four main objectives:
1. Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the workings of the Caribbean legal system.
2. Link the theoretical under linings of various legal issues to the practical component of advocacy skills
3. Execute the functions of a court prosecutor in an efficient manner
4. Display a confident demeanor while speaking in a public environment.
The course’s methods of instruction included lectures, case studies, moot court sessions and video presentations, while the instructors were crown counsels from the DPP’s Office and Magistrates in Barbados.
Cpl. Bergan, who was recently promoted to his present rank, is now assigned to the Force’s Court Prosecution Department. The High Command of the Police Force wishes both officers every success in their tasks ahead.
