The Local Organizing Committee for the 2008 CARIFTA (The Caribbean Free Trade Association)games in St Kitts – Nevis, was on hand in full force to receive the CARIFTA Flag and the symbolic Baton, signaling its readiness to host the next edition of the prestigious meet.

Lester Hanley, Chairman of the LOC 2008 expressed his organization’s profound gratitude to the Turks and Caicos for their successful hosting of the 2007 CARIFTA Games on Providenciales. He gave his organization’s and the nation’s commitment to continuing the tradition and enhancing the legacy of the CARIFTA Games in 2008.

American Airlines Service From New York To St. Kitts

Good news for the tourism industry in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

American Airlines is to officially announce Monday night, the introduction of direct service from New York’s John F. Kennedy International into St. Kitts’ Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport.

According to well-informed sources the New York – St. Kitts – Nevis service is to commence on Sunday November 18th 2007.

American Airlines already operates a direct flight between St. Kitts and Miami.

Nevis Woman Is The First Female Supreme Court Master

Another Nevisian has joined the ranks of the legal fraternity in the Caribbean, this time it’s Ms. Pearletta Lanns of Hanleys Road in Gingerland. She said she was humbled with the news of her appointment which would take effect from May 01, 2007.
 
Ms. Lanns, the first female in the Federation to be appointed to the position, told the Department of Information during an interview on Friday April 20, 2007, that the humbleness that she felt upon learning of her new appointment stemmed from the realisation that although she had been called to served at a higher level she remained a servant of the people.
 
“I felt proud of my career, I have performed in various roles and have gained a vast amount of experience and have grown in stature in the performance of those roles. As registrar I have seen judges at work, I have seen Masters at work, I have observed what to do and what to say and I have gained a lot of knowledge which I think will be an asset to me as I undertake my new role as Master,” she said.

Pianos Play Key Role At Tyrell Williams Primary School

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis (April 19, 2007)

The piano and its soothing melodies will help to act as a socialization and developmental tool at the Tyrell Williams Primary School in Old Road.

The school received a donation of 10 folding pianos with accessories and 20 piano books from the Bushell family expatriates living in New York, U.S.A. The Bushells and extended relatives from the Williams and Taylor families have a history of giving back to their homeland. In 2003, they donated a digital camera to the Ministry of Culture for use in its quest to document important cultural events and heritage sites on St. Kitts. They also donated a folding roller piano and related music materials as well as a mathematics text book to the Old Road community last year.

Coreen Small of the Ministry of Social and Community Development explained that her ministry received the gifts on behalf of the Old Road community and decided that they would best serve the local primary school because of the many associated positives.

Bulb Replacement Programme To Save Nevis $$$

Charlestown, Nevis (April 18, 2007)

Despite a minor setback of a delayed shipment of supplies from their homeland, a number of visiting Cuban social workers began their task of replacing thousands of incandescent bulbs in households on Nevis to energy saving bulbs, a project Junior Minister Hon. Carlisle Powell responsible for Utilities said, would save the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) a total of US$1.4million annually.
 
Mr. Powell told the Department of Information, that the project which is referred to as the Incandescent Bulbs Replacement Programme is part of a goodwill gesture by the Cuban government extended to select islands in the Caribbean.
 
“Based on the report done for us by the Cubans, it could mean saving the island up to a total of US$1.4 million per year and this divided between savings on fuel and electricity consumption. The Cubans are looking at changing approximately 54,000 light bulbs during this period. I think that it is a significant undertaking by the Cubans.
