Pianos Play Key Role At Tyrell Williams Primary School

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis (April 19, 2007)

The piano and its soothing melodies will help to act as a socialization and developmental tool at the Tyrell Williams Primary School in Old Road.

The school received a donation of 10 folding pianos with accessories and 20 piano books from the Bushell family expatriates living in New York, U.S.A. The Bushells and extended relatives from the Williams and Taylor families have a history of giving back to their homeland. In 2003, they donated a digital camera to the Ministry of Culture for use in its quest to document important cultural events and heritage sites on St. Kitts. They also donated a folding roller piano and related music materials as well as a mathematics text book to the Old Road community last year.

Coreen Small of the Ministry of Social and Community Development explained that her ministry received the gifts on behalf of the Old Road community and decided that they would best serve the local primary school because of the many associated positives.

Bulb Replacement Programme To Save Nevis $$$

Charlestown, Nevis (April 18, 2007)

Despite a minor setback of a delayed shipment of supplies from their homeland, a number of visiting Cuban social workers began their task of replacing thousands of incandescent bulbs in households on Nevis to energy saving bulbs, a project Junior Minister Hon. Carlisle Powell responsible for Utilities said, would save the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) a total of US$1.4million annually.
 
Mr. Powell told the Department of Information, that the project which is referred to as the Incandescent Bulbs Replacement Programme is part of a goodwill gesture by the Cuban government extended to select islands in the Caribbean.
 
“Based on the report done for us by the Cubans, it could mean saving the island up to a total of US$1.4 million per year and this divided between savings on fuel and electricity consumption. The Cubans are looking at changing approximately 54,000 light bulbs during this period. I think that it is a significant undertaking by the Cubans.

St.Kitts – Nevis Music Festival Raises The Bar

Chairman of the Marketing and Promotions Subcommittee for the St. Kitts Music Festival, Clement “˜Juni’ Liburd said the 11th annual staging of the show will meet and surpass expectations as a new decade of excellence is ushered in.

During an SKNIS interview, Liburd referred to the exciting lineup of artistes signed to date which includes Michael Bolton, Big Boi of Outkast, Ne-Yo, Sean Paul, Maxi Priest, Machel Montana, Steel Pulse and Lady Saw. He also mentioned the ambience of the top class venue ““ Warner Park as well as the variety of music genres and complementary activities staged around the event as ingredients for the continued success of the festival.

The Marketing and Promotions Chairman said there will be a number of changes this year, one of which features the event being reduced from four nights to three due to the declining attendance and revenue generation on the Sunday nights. Most visitors leave the island earlier that day to prepare for work on Monday.

Carlisle Powell states that the manager of the water department Mr. Floyd Robinson explained the water situation to the people of Nevis on Tuesday, April 10th, 2007.
 
The Nevis Island Administration has recognized that they have inherited a water problem which was left unresolved by the previous CCM Government.   The present government under the command of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) has been working tirelessly to get the water situation under control.

Minister Is Satisfied With Nevis Road Project

Junior Minister in the Ministry of Communication and Works the Hon. Carlisle Powell has expressed satisfaction with ongoing work on the EC$25million Phase III of the Road Rehabilitation Project (RIMP).
 
During a recent interview with the Department of Information, the Minister spoke on the progress of the project which commenced in November 2006. He said the Jamaican based contractors Surrey Paving and Aggregate Company Limited (SPA), had moved quickly and so far, executed the project in a professional manner, a view he believed many Nevisians shared.
