St. Kitts and Nevis To Attend OECS Tourism Meeting

Basseterre, St. Kitts, (MAY 29TH 2007)

Chief Executive Officer of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, Ms. Christine Walwyn, will be among OECS Tourism Ministers discussing the impact of HIV/AIDS on the OECS’ Tourism Sector.

According to the OECS Secretariat in St. Lucia, the 5th meeting of the OECS Council of Tourism Ministers from May 31st to June 1st, 2007 will take place in Grenada.

The Council will also review the sub region’s hosting of Cricket World Cup 2007 and post-event measurement of its economic impact.

Digicel Supports Special Olympics

The Special Olympics movement in St. Kitts and Nevis received a renewed commitment from Digicel to sponsor its ongoing programmes.

Country Manager Donovan White dialed in his company’s support for the organization on Thursday by signing an official document. The signing was witnessed by Clarice Cotton, the National Director of Special Olympics and Permanent Secretary of Sport Lloyd Lazar. During the National Special Olympics Games on Tuesday, Mr. White explained that Digicel international has a strong relationship with Special Olympics.

“We will continue to lend our support to this progressive and well needed movement not just in St. Kitts and Nevis, but all across the world because Special Olympics is indeed a special thing for some very, very special people,” he said. “The chairman and owner of Digicel Mr. Dennis O’Brien was the chairman of the last Special Olympic Games and he will be the deputy chairman of the organizing committee for this Olympic Games so Special Olympics for us means a lot.”

Hundreds Expected In St. Kitts – Nevis This Weekend

The population of St. Kitts and Nevis is expected to increase by several hundred over the course of the next few days as a number of sports-tourism related activities take place.

The Leeward Islands Masters Cricket Tournament begins on Friday. The three-day contest features teams from Antigua, Anguilla, St. Maarten, St. Croix, Nevis and host St. Kitts. Matches will be played at the Cayon and Conaree Sporting Complex. Team members and their supporters begin arriving today.

Carol Clarke, Sports Tourism Officer in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture, told SKNIS that the ministry is proud to be associated with this annual event which is being hosted in the Federation for the first time. Matches begin tomorrow and conclude on Sunday with the finals.
