SKN Spearheads Sustainable Use Of Marine Resources Program

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Cedric Liburd is spearheading the formation of a new global body of parliamentarians committed to the principle of the sustainable use of the world’s marine resources.

Minister Liburd, who is in Anchorage, Alaska, attending the 59th International Whaling Conference (IWC) said that the organization would focus its attention on global fisheries development and the utilisation of fish to guarantee food, security, especially in developing countries.

International journalist Tony Best in a report for Hardbeatnews in New York noted that while the impetus for this new global body came on the margins of the annual conference of the International Whaling Commission, first in St. Kitts and Nevis last year, it seems to be moving forward at the current 59th IWC meeting in Anchorage, Alaska, this week.

Minister Liburd, who is chairman of a working  group that is drawing up plans for the proposed body of parliamentarians, told a session of parliamentarians and the fisheries experts of like-minded countries, that the creation of the new entity was vital to the effort designed to promote sustainable use of marine resources globally.

Cuba Offers More Assistance To St. Kitts and Nevis

The Republic of Cuba has reaffirmed its strong commitment to building economic, social and cultural ties with the nations of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

This affirmation has come from Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Felipe Perez and his delegation during last week’s OECS Heads of Government Meeting in Grenada.

“The Minister reaffirmed Cuba’s strong commitment to building economic, social and cultural ties with the OECS and pledged his country’s continued support for the region through the maintenance and expansion of a number of cooperation projects,” the communique issued at the end of the meeting stated.

The Cuban Minister announced that his Caribbean nation will continue the Miracle Eye project which allows Cuban doctors to perform eye surgeries, but patients will now have the operations conducted in their home island, reducing the need to travel to Havana.

Nevis Winfest 2K7 Hailed A Success

Charlestown, Nevis (May 29, 2007)

Chairman of the St. James Festival Committee Mr. Pearlivan Wilkin hailed Winfest 2K7 as a success. The Whit weekend community festival with the theme “Celebrating with Action Windward Fest 2007″, was the first in what is expected to be an annual parish activity.
 
“In my opinion it went generally well.  It was incident free and I think it was a very good weekend. The festival brought people together and stimulated economic activity, they were two of the five main objectives we wanted to meet this year,” he told the Department of Information on Tuesday May 29, 2007.
 
The festival was sponsored by telecommunications provider (Chippie) UTS Cariglobe and was held under the patronage of Mr. Nathan “Supper” Jeffers a distinguished senior citizen of the St. James Parish.
 
According to Mr. Wilkin, the Committee hoped to achieve more strategic goals to revitalise and penetrate the Parish’s dying culture and heritage and to provide potential contestants for Nevis’ annual Culturama Festival in successive festivals.
 
Meantime, at Winfest’s official opening ceremony at the White Hall Basketball Court on Friday May 25, 2007, Minister of Culture the Hon. Hensley Daniel noted that the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), had taken a decision to organise the parish festivals to give persons additional opportunities for self expression.
 
“The thinking is that the community festivals must provide the spirit for Culturama and if the people are accustom to share in the culture diversity of their respective parishes then we can expect a greater showpiece during Culturama and that is one of the reasons, the aim being to strengthen the engagement and involvement in Culture at the community level so that we can have van improved Culturama throughout the year,” he said.
