Special Olympics Thanks Supporters

A weekend benefit concert aboard the cruise ship Freewinds was the latest activity in the Special Olympics’ “Road to Shanghai, China” campaign.

A packed house rocked to the music of Dominican vocalist Michele Henderson as she belted out hits from past albums. Henderson was accompanied by the Freewinds Band, which also provided entertaining performances for the audience.

National Director of Special Olympics Clarice Cotton told SKNIS that she is grateful for the continued support shown by various agencies and individuals.

Referring to the concert on Saturday, Ms Cotton expressed gratitude to the Captain and crew of the Freewinds for hosting the concert and providing the entertainment. She also thanked the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and Culture, which organized the benefit show, for its continued support.

Turkey Donates 50 PCs To St. Kitts – Nevis

Fifty computers were donated to the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis by the Government of Turkey, during a brief official handing over ceremony at the Basseterre High School, on Tuesday, July 10th.

The computers will be allocated to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the St. Kitts – Nevis Trades and Labour Union and the ICT Department.

The majority of the computers, thirty of them, will be handed over to the Ministry of Education, as that Ministry seeks to achieve its mandate of making computers accessible to every secondary and primary school student in the island.

Minister of Education, Hon. Sam Condor expressed his gratitude to the Turkish Government, through their Honorary Consul, Mr. Michael Morton, and added that he hoped that this was just the beginning of very fruitful relationship.

He noted that such assistance will go a long way in placing St. Kitts and Nevis on the cutting edge of technology.
Minister Condor, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, spoke of his Ministry’s aggressive drive to outfit all schools, secondary and primary, with computers and creating positive avenues to make more productive young people.

Caribbean Leaders Evaluate Regional Integration

Caribbean Heads of Government at the 28th Heads of Government Meeting in Barbados have been evaluating the issues of functional cooperation as one of the main foundation pillars on which the community pursues its integration process.

Since health and social development is one of the subject areas of success in functional cooperation, the Report, presented by St. Kitts and Nevis‘ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, was as a result of a commitment given during the last CARICOM Inter-Sessional.

It concentrated on the development and achievement in the area of education, training and skill acquisition in preparing Caribbean people to provide skilled and professional services within the community.

Reference was particularly made to the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVG) and accreditation, which certifies students in secondary, post secondary education system and especially in arrangements for school to work transition.
