St. Kitts – Nevis Price Controls

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
November 01, 2007

Twenty-nine items comprising basic food items such as chicken, meats, fish and rice as well as non-food goods including toothpaste, disposable diapers, and some pharmaceutical products are addressed in the Price Control Order.

At a press conference on Thursday at Government Headquarters, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris said the price control initiative is a direct intervention by Government to protect consumers and small businesses from the spiraling costs of goods, and to achieve a level of moderation in the cost of living.

“We empathize with the public concern,” the Minister stressed. “We are aware that the inflationary trajectory of prices is partly caused by imported inflation since we import almost all that we consume.

“The Government, however, is concerned about the diminishing purchasing power of pensioners on fixed incomes, our workers on the Industrial Estate, our domestic workers and other categories of fixed income earners who continue to see their hard earn dollars stretched each week.”

Junior Minister in the Ministry of Communications and Works with special responsibilities for Public Utilities Hon Carlisle Powell, said the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) was keen to improve the quality of services provided to the public by all government owned and operated agencies in its effort to make life better for all Nevisians.

The Minister made the disclosure on Thursday November 01, 2007, at the Mount Nevis Hotel, while he addressed senior staff members of the Nevis Electricity Company Ltd. (NEVLEC), at the start of a two-say workshop on Personal Productivity.
He regarded the NEVLEC and the Caribbean Electricity Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) sponsored workshop as an investment in the future of the company.

“Training of the human resource in a company is a tremendous investment in the future of the company. I am delighted that NEVLEC has identified “Personal Productivity” as the topic to be explored over the next two days. I am sure that the Human Resource Department was quick to recognise that if personal productivity improves, the company will benefit by getting more out of its workers,” he said.
