Caribbean Tourism Day: Nevis Student Awarded

Premier of Nevis and Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Joseph Parry, on Tuesday November 6th 2007, joined with the rest of the region to endorse the observance of  Caribbean Tourism Day 2007.  The annual observance designated by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation is celebrated this year under the theme “The next generation: learning form the past, preparing for the future”
 
The Tourism Minister accompanied by Tourism Officer, Miss Nicole Liburd and Principal Education Officer Mrs. Jennifer Hodge, visited the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS) during its morning assembly and presented a US$200 cheque to Miss I-Shana Broadbelt. Miss Broadbelt won the senior category in the local leg of the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) “My Caribbean” Essay Contest.
 
While he commended Miss Broadbelt and the school for their outstanding performance Mr. Parry seized the opportunity to explain the importance of the theme and encouraged the students to continue to participate in the competitions.

Nevis Coconut Mulch Superior And Safe

Director of Agriculture on Nevis Dr. Kelvin Daly, said the use of coconut mulch in every area of farming was superior and safe and had several benefits. He advised farmers to use the local mulch offered by his Department over other imported varieties. He made the comment on Tuesday November 06, 2007, during an interview with the Department of Information at his Prospect Office.
 
“It is a superior type of mulch, it is the most expensive if you were to purchase in the United States of Europe and the reason why it is so expensive is because of its properties. It’s superior in water retention, maintaining colour, preventing soil erosion and it is a natural repellant for snails,” he said.

World Bank Calls On Nevis Students To Pursue Education

Students of the Charlestown Secondary School on Nevis have been called upon to pursue courses of study that would determine their future and the future of the island.
 
World Bank Senior Education Specialist, Mrs. Cynthia Hobbs urged the students while she delivered remarks on Friday November 2nd 2007, at a ceremony to commission the new expansion of the Charlestown Secondary School. The $4.3million project was funded by the World Bank.
 
She disclosed that a team from the Bank had been working over the years on a study to look at how the economy had evolved in the Eastern Caribbean and the kind of skills that would be necessary for the labour market.
 
“We’ve done surveys, we’ve talked to a lot of different firms and industries, we’ve talked to chambers of commerce, we’ve met with ministries of education, finance and agriculture to try to get a sense of what the changes in the economy would mean for the future of the island.

Marriott To Purchase Local St. Kitts – Nevis Produce

The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government’s strong appeal to the St. Kitts Marriott Resort and Royal Beach Casino and other hotels and local supermarkets to purchase locally-grown fruits, meats and vegetables from local farmers has met some success.

Last Saturday, the St. Kitts Farmer’s Cooperative Society Ltd and members of the executive team of the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for local farmers to supply fruits and vegetables to the hotel.

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas in welcoming this significant achievement said his government will continue to intensify its thrust to enhance linkages between agriculture and tourism as it is of major critical importance to economic growth and development in the twin-island Federation.

Prime Minister Douglas in expressing appreciation to the Marriott Resort for the confidence placed in local farmers noted that the agreement will not only bring cash to the farmers and increase their standard of living, but also result in a decrease in the importation of fruits and vegetables.
