Nevis Caregivers Are Positive Role Models For Youth

The architect of the Pre Mothers Day Celebration and Commendation Exercise of Exemplary Care Givers of Mothers on Nevis organised by the Social Services Department in the Nevis Island Administration, said on Tuesday April 29, 2008, that her personal experience and the need to show the youth positive role models, were the driving forces behind the project.

Gender Affairs Officer in the Department of Social Services Mrs. Oslyn Griffin-Kelly, told the Department of Information that the idea of the programme bubbled in her head when she joined the Gender Affairs Unit in February 2008. She said she later brought it to the attention of the Department’s Director Ms. Sandra Maynard who supported her idea and provided her with the necessary tools to plan and execute the programme.

“I was motivated from a personal standpoint. I often visit the elderly and I communicate with caregivers and I realized that our experiences have been similar. I was a care giver myself,” she said.

Mrs. Kelly recalled that her stint as a caregiver was not planned. However, she took a life changing decision while she was away at university in Canada to return to Nevis to care for her ailing parents.

The last of 12 living children who had migrated to other lands, Mrs. Kelly said it was difficult for the other members of her family to uproot themselves for varying reasons and she felt heartbroken and unfair that her mom had given birth to 17 children, which included two sets of twins and had to be left to care for herself and her husband (who was six years her elder) in her weakened state.

PRESS RELEASE ON FOOD BASKET FOR TAX RELIEF ON NEVIS.

Fellow Nevisians:

The rising cost of oil on the International Market, coupled with other factors such as the extensive use of crops and farm lands by some countries for the production of alternative fuels, as well as droughts in countries as far away as Australia, have led to dramatic increases in the prices of food globally. The rise in food prices locally is not the doing of your Government.

Nevertheless, your Nevis Island Administration is committed to polices that will ensure that the cost of living in Nevis is kept as low and as normal as possible.

With this in mind your Government has decided to take steps which will lead to a reduction in the cost of imported food and some non food items, designed to counter the global crisis. The Nevis Island Administration has therefore decided to:

(a) cut consumption tax on a number of items by a 10% reduction, and

(b) compute the consumption tax on the said items on CIF only.

In a move to protect the people of Nevis and to soften the impact of the increasing global food and oil prices, the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) moved with immediate effect, to implement tax relief measures on select food and non food items on the island.

Junior Minister with responsibility for Trade on Nevis disclosed at a press briefing in Charlestown, on Tuesday April 29, 2008, that the Administration was committed to the formulation of policy to ensure that the cost of living was kept to a minimum.

“With this in mind, the government has decided to take steps which will lead to a reduction of the cost of imported foods and some none food items designed to counter the global crisis. The government has decided to cut consumption taxes on a number of items by a rate of at least 10 percent. Additionally, the NIA has decided to compute the consumption taxes on Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) only. The NIA believes that a reduction in consumption tax would reduce the cost of specified items to the consumer.

“It is important to note that the formula for the computing of consumption tax is cost insurance and freight plus import duties, times the relative percentage of consumption taxes. Consumption tax is therefore varied between 7.5percent and 22.5percent depending on the particular item. The government has decided to approve food items identified by the study of food consumption patterns, which was undertaken in 2007 and which captured a wide cross section of food consumption patterns in Nevis,” he said.

The outfield of the Warner Park cricket stadium and the practice turf of the Len Harris Cricket Academy will remain in top shape when the Australian and West Indies cricket teams battle in St. Kitts on July 4 and 6.

The regular maintenance schedule of the Ministry of Sports coupled with the recent donation by Reginald Francis of St. Kitts Marine Works, will ensure this.

Mr. Francis explained that he held discussions with the grounds men at Warner Park and learnt that a specialized type of sand was required to aid the nourishment of the field. He added that the sand is not native to St. Kitts and Nevis and so he acquired the coarse sand from St. Maarten.

“St. Kitts Marine Works “¦ transported it [the sand] via barge, we trucked it here to Warner Park and took care of all of the expenses,” Francis said, adding that the investment in sports is money well spent as it positively impacts young people.

The Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph W. Parry returned to the Federation Tuesday evening after leading a delegation to the British and US Virgin Islands this past weekend. The gathering was designed to update and inform Nevisians residing there, on the progress the Nevis Reformation Party led Nevis Island Administration has made since taking office in July 2006.

The meetings were held at Maria’s by the Sea in Tortola, BVI and Victor’s Hideaway in St Thomas, USVI.

Both gatherings were well attended as Nevisians and friends of Nevis attended in their numbers to see and hear the report on their beloved island. Included in the meetings was a well organized power point presentation on the development and transformation of Nevis over the past 21 months, as well as a question and answer session which was the highlight each evening.

In his usual enlightening and well articulated style the Premier informed the audience of specific activities employed by his administration to better the standard of living for Nevisians. “This is why this government has been investing in the development of all our people regardless of their political persuasion. It is my Government’s intention to have at least one university graduate in each home in Nevis. We have already sent over one hundred persons to Universities abroad so far and within a next week or so, there would be another fifteen young persons going off to Trinidad to be trained and certified in plumbing, electricity and construction. This will put them in a position not only to earn more, but also to branch out and become owners of their own businesses,” he noted.
