UNESCO Youth Path Teams Up With St. Kitts – Nevis

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) funded Youth Path groups in the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, collaborated for the second time in 2008 to observe their individual projects. This took place recently, when the Saint Kitts chapter visited their counterparts on Nevis at the historic Heritage Village at Fothergills Estate, where the Youth Path on Nevis held a ceremony to highlight and showcase their project.

Minister of Youth and Social Development in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Hensley Daniel who attended the ceremony, impressed on the youths to recognise the link between heritage and tourism. Mr. Daniel also encouraged them to take their heritage seriously and to use it for added economic value, through the tourism industry.

He enlightened the youths about their African heritage. They were also informed of the European influence in the nation, which afforded them to have African and European ideas help carve a niche in tourism.

“In reading about Youth Path, I’ve noticed that it is for youth poverty alleviation through tourism. It is a strategic effort to ensure that we continue to derive economic benefits from tourism. I want to associate myself as you would well imagine with the alleviation of poverty,” he said.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has warmly welcomed the new Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan to the twin-island Federation.

His Excellency Rong-chuan Wu, who arrived here on Monday evening, presented his credentials on Wednesday morning to St. Kitts and Nevis’ Governor General His Excellency Dr. Sir Cuthbert Sebastian before paying a courtesy call on Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas on Wednesday afternoon.

Warmly welcoming the new Taiwanese on his own behalf, as well as on behalf of his Government and the People of St. Kitts and Nevis, Prime Minister Douglas said he was pleased that the new Ambassador had arrived 12 hours after the departure of former Ambassador His Excellency and Mrs. John Liu “to continue the tremendous work of cooperation and development of better relations between our two countries.”

“St. Kitts and Nevis continues to be a very firm and strong dedicated friend of the Government and People of Taiwan,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who noted that he had the opportunity to speak with outgoing Taiwanese President, His Excellency Chen Shui-Bian a few weeks ago.

Former Taiwan Ambassador to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, His Excellency Mr. John Liu and Mrs. Liu were formally bade farewell during a dinner in their honour hosted by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

In brief remarks at Formosa Gardens Restaurant, Prime Minister Douglas expressed the gratitude of his Government and People for the work done by Ambassador Liu in deepening the friendly relations between St. Kitts and Nevis and Taiwan.

Dr. Douglas described Ambassador Liu as a person who understood hard work.

“One who had come from a relatively humble family, a farming family from the rural parts of Taipei, and I myself had similar upbringing in the rural parts of St Kitts and Nevis,” said Dr. Douglas.

Chevron Donation To Cardin Home

The Ministry of Health has received yet another donation for the Cardin Home from Chevron, better known as Texaco.

Supervisor of the Cardin Home Mr. George Richards hosted a brief handing over ceremony during which the District Manager of Chevron Mr. Hiram Acevedo made the presentation. He said a similar donation was made in December 2006 and this new one consisted of food and household cleaning products, as well as two television sets ““ one would remain in the Cardin Home while the next one would go to the care facility in Saddlers. All present were wished well and encouraged to make good use of the commodities.

The Chevron District Manager mentioned that his company has been partnering and contributing to the Federation for over four years by donating to the elderly, schools, sporting activities and all persons who have been supporting their corporation in the Federation. He said this was their means of showing their appreciation.

St. Kitts and Nevis joined with other countries of the world in celebrating World Day for Health and Safety at Work, yesterday.

The day was celebrated internationally under the theme “My Life, My Work, My Safe Work, Managing Risks in the Work Environment.” In St. Kitts, the Labour Department, the Ministry of Health and the Social Security Board came together to host a symposium under the theme “The Merits of Managing Risks in the Work Environment.

Just about 74 participants attended the session which took place at the Ocean Terrace Inn (OTI).

According to Acting Commissioner of Labour Mr. Spencer Amory, the International Labour Organisation places high priority on the health and safety of employees. He said the symposium was intended to create awareness and sensitize persons in the workplace, which he said is vital at this point in time when the economies of the region will be coming together in the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME). He further noted that certain issues such as injury, illness and accidents associated with work would be addressed.
