Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry and his wife Mrs. Myrtle Parry, hosted a cocktail party at the Old Manor Hotel on July 17, in honour of the 2008 Culturama participants.

The cocktail featured speeches by Premier Parry, this year’s Chairman of Culturama Mr. Halstead Byron as well as representatives from the various sub committees.

Premier Parry in his presentation offered words of support to the participants but focussed heavily on the issue of deviant behaviour.  He encouraged the public to collaborate with the police and assist them in any way possible.

“Every precaution is being taken to make sure we have good shows.  Every effort is being made by the Police Force on St. Kitts and on Nevis to make sure you are protected.

“The Police is aware of what is taking place.  They have done their homework, they have organised themselves and they are ready for any eventualities,” Minister Parry said.

He appealed to parents to enroll their sons in positive activities in order to avoid them becoming delinquent.

“I am always surprised and I have been surprised for the past two years that we speak of the Juniour Calypso Show, then you see all the girls coming up and hardly any boys and it is a bad message in our community, that more and more the boys are not getting involved in anything positive and constructive.

Nevis Island Officials Travel To Trinidad

Nevis Minister - Robelto Hector

Nevis Land and Housing Minister – Robelto Hector

Charlestown, Nevis
July 17, 2008

Minister with responsibility for Land and Housing Hon. Robelto Hector and Legal Advisor in the Nevis Island Administration Mr. Patrice Nisbett left Nevis on July 17, 2008, on a government business trip to Trinidad and Tobago. General Manager of the Nevis Housing and Land Development Corporation (NHLC) Mr. Eustace Nisbett also formed part of the delegation.

The team will be involved in negotiations with the Unit Trust of Trinidad and Tobago with regard to two loans totaled US$15million to the NHLC. Ten million dollars of the loan was used to finance the compulsory acquisition of 730 acres of land in the Pinneys area. The delegation will also seek to put in place easier access for new property owners in that area for marketable titles.

“There is an incumberence in favour of the Unit Trust Corporation on the titles held by the Nevis Housing and Lands Development Corporation and in order to facilitate the giving of clear unencumbered and marketable titles to purchasers of lots in Nugent Village, Nugent Heights and the Pinneys commercial area, one would have to obtain the requisite consent from the officials of the Unit Trust Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago.

“We have been experiencing some difficulty in obtaining the requisite consent and so we are journeying to Trinidad and Tobago to negotiate with the officials of the Unit Trust and to see if we could persuade them to put in place an easier method of obtaining the consent, so that the Corporation upon receiving the proceeds from the purchasers would be in a position to convey a good, clear and unincumbered marketable title to the purchasers,” he said.

Officials of the Nevis Land and Housing Corporation (NLHC) visited the Shaws Road Housing Development Project on Thursday July 17, 2008, for a first hand view of the work there. The project formed part of a wider Bigger and Better Homes Project for all Nevisians which was launched by the Corporation in 2007.

General Manager of the NLHC Mr. Eustace Nisbett, said during his progress report that the project was on schedule and expected to be completed in August.

“The Shaws Road Housing Development commenced in early June 2008 and work here is progressing smoothly. We commenced the construction of 11 structures. Previously there were eight completed structures and we are expecting that this project would be completed within the second week of August,” he said.

According to Mr. Nisbett, not only would 11 home owners soon have their own homes but the project had provided gainful employment for seven local contractors and a 28 – man crew.

Also on the visit was Minister with responsibility for Lands and Housing in the Nevis Island Administration Hon. Robelto Hector, who too voiced his satisfaction with the work status and gave the project his stamp of approval.

“The last time I was here, there were only seven homes and four starting foundations. I am happy to see that we have almost 18 homes in this area, the majority of which are near completion.

When asked about his impression of Warner Park, he said that the facility has to be rated as “one of the finest in this region.” “I like it because it suits the island “¦ and it’s properly maintained. I think this is the pride of the island,” he stressed.

Having visited 20 years ago to represent his country in a cricket match against the Windward Islands, Hale stated that has been a tremendous difference.
