Chairman of the Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority (NASPA) Board Mr. Laurie Lawrence, told a gathering of officials from the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), NASPA staff and members of the public, that the breakdown of the only fire tender at the airport on Nevis in January highlighted a major weakness at the airport and by extension the island.

He said at a recent ceremony to commission a new fire tender that the incident which had forced civil aviation officials to down grade the airport to a level three, was a source of major inconvenience to the traveling public and had highlighted a dearth of skills on Nevis in the diagnosis and maintenance of sophisticated mechanical equipment.

“I would like to encourage some of our young students who are academically inclined to consider pursuing advanced studies in the technical areas such as mechanics, engineering and electricity,” he said.

Mr. Lawrence also encouraged the NIA to place more emphasis on the provision of training in the technical areas which he pointed to. He said large sums were spent on training in the traditional areas of business, law, accounting and finance and not enough on the critical technical and vocational areas that were urgently needed on Nevis.

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
August 20, 2008 (SKNIS):

The aesthetics of the St. Peter’s Community will be greatly enhanced with the transformation of the Parray’s Village Playing Field and the construction of the St. Peter’s Community Park.

During an open forum with residents, Parliamentary Representative for the area Honourable Cedric Liburd assured attendees that one of the motivating factors for pursuing the completion of the project is his concern for young people.  He said that the recent surge in crime, in the Caribbean, has forced governments and ordinary citizens to invest in avenues where youth can channel their energies in a positive manner.  The Sporting Complex was described as one such venture.  Minister Liburd said that the sporting facility would be managed by a Sporting Council.

Architectural Technologist Cavelle Brookes explained that there would be a St. Peter’s Community Park located at Douglas’ Estate.  She said that the park would be for leisure and recreational activities and would add to the areas historic importance considering that St. Peter’s is the location of several landmarks including Lawyer Stephen’s Cave and De Poincy’s Chateaux.  According to Ms. Brookes, the first phase consists a single story activity building which will house a museum and a make-shift concessions stand.  Phase 2 will see the construction of a three timber-framed gazebos, while Phase 3 is an amphitheatre, water fountain and monument, complete with landscaping.

Minister and Area Representative for the St. Pauls constituency Hon. Robelto Hector, described the drag racing track under construction at New River, as one that would meet international standards and be ranked among the best in the Caribbean. The track is earmarked for completion by the end of August.

The Minister made the disclosure when he spoke with the Department of Information on August 18, 2008. He said the though the project was a campaign promise, it was also designed to remove racing from the streets of Nevis into a safer environment, to provide employment and to expand on the island’s tourism product.

“During the campaign of 2006 we sought of introduced drag racing as a sport to the general public. We felt here was an opportunity for us to introduce it as a sport at the same time it had great implications in terms of the tourism product that can be expanding and so on coming into government we set about making this a reality.

“Drag racing is an effort to take racing off the road and to give an avenue for youngsters to develop themselves and to practice racing as a sport. In getting the facility now at New River, it is an opportunity for this to be a reality,” he said.
