The 12th Annual Saddle Fiesta celebrations bring communities together to showcase their talents and should focus on the challenges the young people are facing.

Prime Minister and Parliamentary Representative, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas who officially opened the annual festival said the events should be used to bring unity and harmony among residents.

“Saddle Fiesta brings together the residents of the communities of Saddlers, Harris’, Lavington, Parsons, Lynches and Pogson and gives them the opportunity to celebrate. We enjoy ourselves in music, dance, other forms of demonstrations of our natural beauty and talents. It is a time when we show case what the young people can do. It brings out their creativity and natural beauty in song and social commentary via calypsos,” said Prime Minister Douglas at the official opening ceremony on the grounds of the Saddlers Primary School.

Dr. Douglas said bringing people from different communities together allows them to socialise and integrate and allows participants an opportunity “to laugh at each other, laugh with each other, laugh at themselves as we recall the days of fun that is part of our heritage that takes us back to our African ancestors.”

“It is a time when we focus on a number of current issues on the environment, health and the elderly. It also helps us to focus on the challenges that our young people are facing today. And out of all of that, we enjoy ourselves as we educate ourselves in some of these areas,” said Dr. Douglas.

Nevis Premier Speaks About Iceland Trip

Premier of Nevis - Joseph Parry

Premier of Nevis – Joseph Parry

Charlestown, Nevis
August 15, 2008

Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry cleared the air on his upcoming two day visit to Iceland and cited it would be for positive reasons related to geothermal energy unlike the Opposition’s charge that it was for prior lack of research on the matter.

Mr. Parry told the Department of Information on August 14, 2008, on the heels of a National Consultation on the Economy which was hosted by Prime Minister Hon. Denzil Douglas at the Marriott Hotel in St. Kitts earlier that day, that he explained to the forum why he found it important to accept an invitation to visit with the government of Iceland.

“I specifically indicated why I was going to Iceland, I thought that was very important because I didn’t want anybody to be mistaken why I was going to Iceland and there are two reasons why I am going. The first reason is to get their government’s support to build our negotiation team for the power purchase agreement and the second reason was to see the economic impact that geothermal has had on Iceland, so that we can get a feel of what it can do in terms of Nevis for the next few years.

“I am not going to Iceland because we have a problem or we did not do proper research at the beginning. I am going to Iceland for positive reasons and I want the public to be quite clear on that and let me finally say  as far as this is concerned I like to define myself, I think I can speak very well I don’t need the Opposition [Concerned Citizens Movement] to define me. They seem better defining me than doing the work they should have done in the last 14 years,” he said.
