The Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture is set to employ new techniques to promote positive behaviour and peaceful attitudes in the young people of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Director of Sports Dave Connor got firsthand knowledge of these methods while participating in the three-day UNESCO Congress on Sports for Peace and Development held in Jamaica.

Director Connor told SKNIS that the September 13 to 16 meeting was extremely productive, as he joined with representatives from approximately 22 countries in the Caribbean, Europe, South America, Africa and Asia, to discuss and highlight pertinent issues regarding sports as a vehicle to promote peace and development.

As such, discussions surrounded presentations by various international organizations and committees to review the issues coming out of the recent round table held in Zanzibar, Tanzania, to reflect on the theme “Sport for Development and Peace”, and its role within a multi-sectoral approach.

St. Kitts and Nevis has been appointed to a nine-member United Nations Credentials Committee set up to review a challenge to the Burma’s membership.

The 63rd UN General Assembly appointed the Credentials Committee comprising Botswana, China, Cyprus, United States, Russia, Luxembourg, Mexico, Mozambique and St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Burmese opposition groups in exile, which have launched the credential challenge to oust the junta at the UN, argue that as the generals have been forcibly retaining power and have ruled the country illegally, therefore the UN should review its credential.

The credential challenge will be first reviewed and discussed by the committee before taking a decision on it.

Over 5000 motor sport enthusiasts from several countries of the Caribbean attended the Inaugural Car and Motorcycle Race at the new St. James Drag Raceway on Nevis, Friday afternoon.

The drag race was the largest ever sporting event to be staged on the island.

The quarter mile race track, believed to be one of the regions finest, had participating cars and motorcycles from Nevis, St.Kitts, the British Virgin Islands and other countries of the region.

The track was built at a cost of $3 Million and official sources say that already there has been a significant return on that investment, as several local vendors, guest house owners, car rental agents , bus drivers, taxi drivers and restaurant owners all enjoyed good business as a result of the well-patronised event.
