Nevis Youth Club Receives Donation From US Donor

The Jessup’s All Stars (JAS) Community Club recently received monetary assistance and power tool for its Bikes not Bombs (BNB) Nevis programme, from United States (US) donor Mr. Jonathan Cooper Allen  This was done by Mr. Gwyndass Jones from Boston, who spent his vacation on Nevis.
 
Mr. Jones presented US $400.00 and a Power Grinder to Club Representative Mrs. Veronica Ferguson, on behalf of Mr. Allen
 
“I am here [at the Jessup BNB site] on behalf of BNB Boston to see the project and to deliver some resources to finish the project. Here is four hundred dollars from a donor for Bikes not Bombs in Boston and here is a grinder for preparing for the paint [work to be done on the Container]” he said.
 
Mrs. Ferguson accepted the check and power grinder from Mr. Jones on behalf of the JAS Club and expressed gratitude to Mr. Allen for his invaluable contribution to the Club.

Nevis Island Health Kick Program Series

Another in the series of Health Kick Initiatives on Nevis was recently held at the Alexandra Hospital. Dr. Dwayne Thwaites said the programmes were successful and for the final leg of the tour, he invited Dr. Joseph Ortenberg to Nevis, to conduct a Screening Clinic for children.
 
Dr. Ortenberg, an expert Pediatric Urologist by profession, deals with the disease process of Hydroceles and Hypospadias. He explained Hydroceles as fluids around the testicles and Hypospadias was a condition with an opening at the head of the testicles and all the way down to the penis scrotal junction.
 
He is also an expert in the repairs of hernias and deals with children struggling with a condition, termed “Enuresis,” commonly known as Bed-wetting.
 
The Urologist said Enuresis was a common medical problem that started among 10 -15 percent of children of Kindergarten age, which sometimes cause them to develop social problems.

Nevis Celebrates Youth Month – 2008

Young people are the focus this April, as the Youth Division of the Social Services Department celebrates Youth Month, 2008, in Nevis.

On Choice FM’s Radio program, Breakfast Menu with host, Walter Morton, Youth Coordinator of the Nevis Social Services Department, Miss Claudia Walwyn, took the opportunity to outline the theme and the activities for the month.

“The theme this year is: Creating a Safe Environment Through Informed and Healthy Choices. We want all youths to go out and take part in the celebration of young people on our island. I believe the activities planned have something for everyone,” said Miss Walwyn.

Australia Name Cricket Teams For West Indies Tour

Australia have named a revamped Test squad and a 14-man team for the five one-day internationals during the upcoming tour of the West Indies, which includes two One-Day International games at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium.

The Australians have recalled batsman Simon Katich and including two spin bowlers.

Veteran leg spinner Stuart MacGill and left-arm spinner Beau Casson are among 15 players selected in the squad for the three-Test series, while Michael Clarke was named vice-captain after the retirement of Adam Gilchrist.

The 14-man squad for the five one-day internationals against the West Indies includes batsman Michael Hussey’s younger brother David for the first time.

According to the Times On-Line, Andrew Hilditch, chair of national selectors, said 26-year-old Clarke would be vice-captain to Ricky Ponting for both squads after he demonstrated his leadership credentials during the summer.

Clarke, who recently rejected the opportunity to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League to spend more time with his ill father, captained the Australian Twenty20 side to victory over India in February.
